Rooted in the Christian principle that language is an image-bearing activity, Bob Jones structures its composition concepts into four different, Christ-expressing and biblically defined goals (empathetic, logical, discerning, and virtuous). Of the 18 chapters, 12 are grammar focused; 5 are writing; and one is research). Developing strong writing skills is rooted in understanding proper grammar and practicing skills from individual word choice to sentence and paragraph-level modifications. Grammar chapters begin with a student question to challenge the analysis of grammar using mentor texts. Students will then learn, practice, and apply that skill, and end with an assessment. Grammar identification uses an in-sentence labeling style. The writing chapters also begin with a challenging question, then a mentor text for analysis, writing steps delineated, charts, and checklists. Assignments include informative, narrative, and argumentative essays. End your year with a multi-genre cumulative assignment that encourages small group work, a works-cited page, timeline, biographical essay, a reflection, and an oral presentation. Course components include two teacher editions (Part 1 and 2), a student worktext (perforated, full-color pages, 545 pgs, pb), assessments, and an assessment answer key.
In the teacher edition, each lesson begins with the objectives, resources needed, preparation tips, and notes. Teach concepts using a 4-step teaching process of Engage, Instruct, Apply, and Assess. Periodically, differentiated suggestions are included. Student material is included in wrap-around format, with answers in red, when applicable. Originally designed for the classroom, you'll see suggested activities for collaborative learning. In addition to in-text directions, you'll find a plethora of instructional aids in the back of each teacher edition. An essential tool is a writing assignment grading rubric examining 8 elements--each on a 5-point scale (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, genre, and meeting the assignment requirements). Additional tools focus on practicing sentence patterns, fixing fragments, using punctuation, creating a works-cited page, and more. The colorful student worktext provides a venue for grammar and writing skills to be modeled, learned, and practiced. The included Handbook provides spelling and study skill aids. The nonreproducible student assessments include preassessments, concept reinforcements, chapter tests, and a final exam. Consumable, perfect-bound pages easily remove from the cardboard back for student use. The Assessments with Answer Key are grammar focused, 3-hole punched, and come shrink wrapped. Answers are included in red. Below each answer, when applicable, you'll find the page number where the concept is addressed. ~ Ruth
