Thorough yet engaging, this reading program reinforces phonetic skills while building fluency and comprehension. Students apply different reading strategies as they read stories both silently and orally. The six readers progress in difficulty and include a variety of genres centered around themes like love, helpfulness, courage, perseverance, joy, and creativity. Students develop critical thinking skills and learn to evaluate characters and their choices through a biblical lens. This new edition has literary selections that align better with the phonics skills taught in Phonics & English 1, 5th Edition. Some sections in the older edition have been removed, such as analogies, composing newspaper articles, journal entries, and letters. However, other sections have been added, including composing poems and different story endings, auditory discrimination skills, differentiated instruction strategies, and added biblical worldview themes. Because of these changes, this edition is not compatible with previous editions. The homeschool kit includes Teacher Edition Parts 1 and 2, six Student Readers, Student Activities book, and Student Activities Answer Key.
Teacher Edition Parts 1 and 2 include new teaching strategies and instruction for 180 lessons divided into six units. Each unit has a biblical theme that highlights reading selections and a lesson plan overview to guide the parent. A reduced copy of the student readers is included along with questions for before, during, and after reading. Lessons provide practice in phonics skills, oral and silent reading, and literary analysis. A book study novel, The Bravest Dog Ever: The True Story of Balto (not included), makes up the last ten lessons in the program. Homeschool parents have access to free online resources, a course gradebook, and more on Homeschool Hub.
The six Student Readers correlate with phonics skills taught in Phonics & English 1, 5th Edition. Each reader progresses in difficulty. There are before and after reading questions, vocabulary words, retelling the story exercises, and notes about the authors and illustrators. The short stories and illustrations are colorful and engaging and include realistic fiction, poetry, fantasy, informational text, fables, biographies, and Bible accounts. Each reader focuses on a different theme.
Student Activities include opportunities for students to practice their reading comprehension and provide other fun activities. There is a front and back sheet for each lesson. The front page focuses on reading comprehension and the back side is a varied creative activity. The spiral-bound Activities Answer Key includes the Activities student pages with answers in red.An impressive and complete reading program, students will learn reading, speaking, and listening skills with a biblical worldview focus. ~ Gina
