Category Description for Highlights Puzzle Readers

Each of these leveled readers feature a short storyline with an assortment of puzzles incorporated into the story. As the reading level goes up, the puzzles in the book get harder. The puzzles could be hidden pictures, mazes, and more. Each book also includes a bonus activity like a joke, recipe, or craft idea. Page count varies between 24 – 32 pages, higher levels having more pages. Answers to the puzzles are in the back of each book.

Level P focuses on letter and sound recognition, storytelling the pictures, and simple shape or letter recognition puzzles. Features very simple dialogue with word bubbles rather than sentences and paragraphs. Approximately 110-120 on the Lexile reading scale (guided reading levels D-E).

Level 1 focuses on sounding out letters and syllables, reading sight words, expressive reading, and visual puzzles that support concentration and persistence. Features short, easy-to-read sentences and paragraphs. Approximately 250-360 on the Lexile reading scale (guided reading levels G-I).
