This great little chapter book is a wonderful window into a world and a culture that is not often covered in history, namely the day-to-day life and culture of Vietnam. Each vignette usually has animals involved, and how their pets and wild animals shape their way of life. Some Vietnamese folk lore and traditions are also included in the stories. These stories are all written from the authors memory of his life in Vietnam before the war started. Death is a common topic in these stories and it definitely contains some mature content or themes.
