Novare Accelerated Studies in Physics & Chemistry (ASPC) is the first course in the Novare Science High School Accelerated Pathway, which takes a Physics first approach to science. Successful completion of Algebra 1 is a prerequisite. Students will encounter math concepts such as scientific notation, unit conversions, metric prefixes, solving for an unknown variable, and significant digits. ASPC includes a full Physics course, similar to the Novare Introductory Physics, but completes the physics in roughly 6 months, allowing students to study introductory Chemistry. Upon completion of this course, students are well prepared to take Chemistry for Accelerated Students. Novare employs a mastery approach to learning science where students are taught how to learn, master, and retain what they learn. A curriculum that uses this approach covers fewer topics and covers them more deeply. This text also integrates learning by combining skills in the areas of science, math, science history, and English language usage. This text is written from a Biblical worldview and seeks to help students see God's work in the world. Though designed from a creationist perspective, the author holds to the view that the world is billions of years old and teaches current science theory. Required resources include the Accelerated Studies in Physics and Chemistry Student Edition, Digital Resources, Experiments for Introductory Physics and ASPC, and the Solutions Manual. Optional, but recommended is the Student Lab Handbook. There is no Lab Kit, but the convenient Introductory Physics Lab Kit contains most of the supplies for five of the experiments, which are completed in this course and the Novare Introductory Physics.
ASPC is an ideal first science course designed for 9th grade accelerated or "honors" students. These are students who love science, are strong in math, and aspire to a technical career or college program. Freshmen who have completed Algebra I (for example, in 8th grade) are typically best suited to this book. The math is Algebra I level, but exercises are intentionally a little more challenging.
Textbooks feature a clear objectives list at the beginning of each chapter—the student's best friend, so students know exactly what they are accountable to know. Also, answers to calculation exercises are provided right on the same page because of our belief that students need those answers when they are working the problems. This means that homework is not part of their course grade, another unique method that we advocate. Use homework as a learning opportunity, a time to make mistakes and wrestle through to the right answer, not as an assessment of student learning, and not as a padding for poor test grades.
Finally, in the spirit of "drawing students upward into the adult world of science," the six lab experiments for this book emphasize procedures and skills used in real science labs. Scientific notation, metric prefixes, unit conversions, keeping a lab journal, and the writing of lab reports are essential skills that students will thoroughly learn in this text.
Novare Science emphasizes that science education needs to be renewed using research, scientific evidence, and forward-thinking strategies while keeping God at the helm. Students are taught to see God in creation, while learning current scientific theories including the evolutionary theory. Using a mastery approach, students learn fewer topics in more depth than typical courses while reviewing previously learned key concepts. Self-created lab journals and reports are suggested to prepare students for high school and college sciences. Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth Science are taught at the middle school level. At the high school level, Novare takes a Physics first approach to science and offers two pathways for students: Grade-Level Pathway and the Accelerated Pathway. Novare Science offers two High School Pathways that link a student’s math placement and science courses. The Accelerated Pathway was created for students who have taken Algebra 1 in eighth grade, then aligns with a high school math sequence of Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, and Calculus. Taking a Physics first approach, the Accelerated Pathway for Novare Science is Accelerated Studies in Physics and Chemistry, Chemistry for Accelerated Students, Advanced Biology, and Physics Modeling Nature. The Student Lab Handbook is recommended for all courses.
This Novare science course is intended as an alternative to the Novare Introductory Physics. Accelerated Studies in Physics & Chemistry is an introductory course for students who are more motivated and leaning toward honors-level studies. The math pre-requisite is to have completed Algebra 1 and presently taking geometry. Students will encounter math concepts such as scientific notation, unit conversions, metric prefixes, solving for an unknown variable, and significant digits. There are 6 experiments, with extensive notes, found in the appendices at the back of the text. Other experiment resources are mentioned in the front of the book, but they are only if you want more information. With plenty of explanation, illustrations, graphs, charts, students will work toward mastery of the basics for physics and chemistry.
The Student Text includes an introduction that you will want to read carefully, all lesson information, glossary, and appendices of reference data, equations and objectives, experiments, scientist's perspectives, unit conversions tutorial, making accurate measurements, and references. 425 pgs, h/c.
