An added plus is the ability to test students and to determine if there are any gaps in their grade-level learning. The 180 days (one page per school day) of black and white worksheets (reproducible for classroom/families) cover grade-appropriate topics in each of three science strands: Life, Physical, and Earth/Space (12 weeks each). Weekly structure follows a pattern which parallels the scientific process. Day One: read grade-appropriate content and answer questions. Day Two: analyze scientific data. Day Three: develop questions about a scenario related to the week's topic. Day Four: plan an investigation or develop a solution. Day Five: communicate results. This is a supplemental workbook, not a curriculum. It is not aligned to any particular state.
is this a stand-alone, or are there more materials/books required to go along with it?
Stand alone, however it really only touches on subjects and doesn't go into details. I would often supplement by going into more depth on the subjects being taught. But my son loved these books, we used them for the first 5 years of our homeschool.
My son likes nonfiction and needs help with reading. I thought these short passages would interest him and give him daily practice that is not overwhelming

My grandson uses this book to study his science. We love it. I am a teacher and I love working with him. He loves science.
