Category Description for Our 50 States (Gr. 1-4)

Learn from East to West in this one-year geography course organized by 7 US geographical regions (including territories). Students will learn about culture, geography, songs, history and other distinctives. The hefty Our 50 States text highlights each state over two lessons. Did you know Indiana is famous for popcorn—or why Guam and Puerto Rico are US territories? You'll spend about an hour daily with the 104 lessons (4-5 lessons per week). As students come across green highlighted location words, they're encouraged to locate these on the text's included basic map. Students will complete creative writing assignments (52 total) in their own notebook. It is inquiry-based learning with literature focus, and adaptable for multi-age learning. Has family fun projects that get everyone involved, and can customize to your family with versatile options. Hands-on, easy-to-follow activities use common house-hold items while each unit's family activities require additional supplies and might include recipes (popcorn balls or pineapple pops), art projects, and more. These studies are enhanced with 7 engaging books that are each connected with a geographical region: Rabbit Hill, The Cabin Faced West, Soft Rain, The Story of George Washington Carver, The Trumpet of the Swan and The Adventures of Paddy the Beaver, and the 7th, Philip of Texas is a Notgrass reprint of a lovely 1913 book.

In addition, students can complete map activities in the 110-page Atlas Workbook (which reinforces a key geographic term and other chapter content with coloring and simple activities). The 45-page Lesson Review includes 103 5-question reviews and nine, 8-question tests over regions. These Review answers and reading book synopses (with potential questionable elements noted) are in the Answer Key and Literature Guide (19 pgs). You'll find audio song files, additional reading options, activities, supply lists and more at notgrass.com/50links.

Notgrass is the only history curriculum we use in our homeschool. We loved Our 50 States for my 5th grade student. He actually looks forward to doing this every day. The textbooks are high quality and beautifully done. Highly recommend!

Wonderful curriculum!
We are loving Our 50 states curriculum! It is full of beautiful pictures, and interesting points about each state. I have a 10th grader and 1st grader that I am using this curriculum for together. My 10th grader needed a refresher and my 1st grader is learning about our country's geography for the 1st time. They are both enjoying our lessons! I thought about just using atlases and piecing together a plan with various resources, but I am so thankful I did not! I had thought about using this curriculum foe the last few years. I am soon glad I finally did this year!

Equal Pages but Not Equal Coverage
I have been slowly working through Our 50 States over the past 2 years with my 10 and 8 year olds and was thinking of starting it again in a year or two with my younger kids. As we are getting close to the end (the western states) I am noticing that there are many gaps in the details of the diverse geography of this country. For one, there is NOTHING about Southern California! This is shameful. California is a large diverse state and there is so much more to it than San Francisco and the Central Valley. Each state is given exactly the same amount of space (8 pages) regardless of how big, diverse or populated. I have been noticing this about other large states, but California is the most egregious. I have been doing a work around by getting state books from the library that have more thorough information. I have decided to switch to the Memoria Press geography program when I start with my younger kids. We have been slowly adding in more and more MP as we have continued to homeschool. I highly recommend Memoria Press for most subjects so I am hopeful their geography program will be just as good.

Child approved
We have only flipped through this curriculum, but all three of my children are very excited and are loving the student atlas that they get to complete. It looks very fun and engaging while sprinkling in key points in a natural way that children should know about our country.

A great way to get your child interested in geography!
The interesting facts and activities all tie in with geography for each state and really draw in my 4th grader. He loved sharing the odd facts and doing the activity book.

Love this state study curriculum!
My two elementary kids and I both love the "Our 50 States" curriculum from Notgrass. I have the younger one use the activity book, and she loves coloring the different landforms and finding the objects on the map as I read about them from the book. My older child (a son) prefers to answer the questions in the workbook. It's a perfect complement to the "State Songs of the 50 U.S. States" online course from Music in Our Homeschool.

Good for sibling group of elementary kids
We used this with a 4th, 3rd, and 2nd grader. The 7th grader loves history and would often come sit at the table with us to listen if her other work was finished. The text is beautiful, easy to read aloud to the kids and interesting to all of us. We didn't do all of the extra activities, but they were good ideas with things around the house. We took lots of youtube "fieldtrips" with the included video links...our fav was watching how tabasco sauce is made. We learned something unique about each state and had lots of conversation about places we never knew about before but now want to visit. We often tried to purchase a food item if a state we studied was famous for it...everyone's favorite was tasting maple cream for the first time (thx, amazon) after studying about how it is made in Vermont. We did not do the Literature part, but I think it would have been a good set of read-alouds if we hadn't already had a list to work through. For multiple kids, we used one text book for me to read to them and I ordered an Atlas workbook for each kid, they had fun coloring and drawing as I read. We chose not to do any additional tests or written questions, as this was enough. We usually spent about an hour twice a week, but it would easily take longer if you did all the extra activities and lit guide. It was one of the most fun parts of our school year.
