Description
Publisher's Description of Language Lessons for Today Grade 5

A Charlotte Mason and classical approach with short, easy-to-teach lessons for English usage, punctuation, composition, oral language skills, letter writing, and more. This volume contains a more focused study of the parts of speech and begins with an analysis of sentences, in keeping with Charlotte Mason's advice for age-appropriate grammar lessons. Includes narration, picture study (some printed in color), copywork, and dictation, as well as fables and poetry by famous authors. This non-consumable book (not a workbook) has enjoyable oral and written activities that may be used exactly as written or adapted to a child's specific needs and learning style. Includes teacher instructions and answers. Language Lessons for Today: Grade 5 was adapted by My Father's World from Intermediate Language Lessons by Emma Serl (1914), with significant revisions, updated language and examples, and additional new content. For 5th Grade. Cover updated February 2018 with no significant text revisions.

Revised and expanded by My Father's World, this publication builds upon the beloved Emma Serle's Primary and Intermediate Language Lessons, with grade appropriate lessons, additional content, new (colorful) graphics, and parental teaching support and student lessons, all in one book. While the instruction is not comprehensive, there are helpful teaching directives at the top of numerous lessons which are not self-explanatory. The Answer Key is available free online. Directions for accessing the Answer Key are included in the book.

Mrs. Serle's philosophy of oral and written lessons is evident. Lessons are diverse and include oral (later written) composition, picture study, poetry memorization, copywork, dictation, poetry and literature studies, oral narration, and dictionary usage. Lessons are interactive and will take approximately 15-20 minutes per day. If you are intimately familiar with Mrs. Serle's work, you may notice the 2nd grade book is the truest to the original, with significant additions to grade 3 and up, including hymn studies, picture studies based upon Biblical events and persons, and literature excerpts. While the books are considered grade level, there is some flexibility available and parents will easily be able to 'tweak' these books for children of close ages or abilities. Since many of these lessons use classic readings and poetry, they could also be easily adjusted for struggling students, while preserving the child's self-esteem.

Overall, the changes made to this series have only served to improve upon the gentle, exploratory language arts instruction found in Mrs. Serle's classic work. Written activities will require a 3-ring notebook and notebook paper. A dictionary is also recommended for grade 3 and up. Each book contains 102 lessons. ~ Deanne

5fh grade content not challenging/clear enough
Good ideas in general, requires background knowledge from the teacher. Not many exercises. Got my kids hooked up into memorizing poetry! Not enough poems though. Religious content

Our All-in-One Language Lessons
These are easy, child-directed everyday lessons that aren't boring and have so much quality literature and poems as well as art. If you lean Charlotte Mason in your philosophy and methods of home education you will enjoy these thoroughly. I have used with my elementary age children gr. 3, 4 and 5. For my youngest I'll be purchasing gr. 2 for next year and for my oldest finish up with grade 6. These are updated and compiled by the people of My Father's World based on the book "Primary Language Lessons" and "Intermediate Language Lessons" by Emma Serl. I like the coil spiral binding because it is easier for my children to use, as well as the dimensions being larger then that of the editions of Emma Serl's original work you find today. They have also arranged by age/grade, making it easier to use in the first years.

Charlotte Mason Language Arts

Not rigorous. Easy to understand without being overwhelming.

It says other materials are required but I'm having a hard time finding what else I would need to purchase to go along with it. Is there a workbook? How would I go about finding that?

It's a great series! We just finished this book. No extra materials needed. Answers for most things are in the back of the book. We just used a composition notebook to write the answers in as it's not a workbook. I think you need a dictionary for a couple lessons. One of my kids needs extra practice to reinforce concepts so I use Jolly Grammar for her as an add on. But I don't think I'll need to when my younger child uses this later. "The Sentence Family" is a very fun, creative book we've enjoyed adding as well to reinforce grammar basics for all ages.

Does this cover state standards for grammar?

All of my kids have used this to cover Language Arts in elementary school but I don’t know anything about state standards.

Is this religiously based? If so, is it heavily?

It definitely teaches promotes good values/morals. It contains bits of classic pieces of literature mostly - like excerpts from Aesop's Fables, Louisa May Alcott, James Baldwin (book of Fifty Famous People) etc. There is a quote from Charles Kingsley (an English Clergyman) to study too, but many of the lessons don't have religious content.
