While the whole series is great for test prep, grades 9-12 include specific questions (5 per lesson test) formatted to prepare a student for high-stakes exams like the ACT or SAT. Students review their knowledge of words as they are asked to finish the sentence or answer the question with the best word and offered 4 choices. All tests have between 15 and 20 questions.
For example: What does a confidante know? a) history, b) trivia, c) secrets, or d) passwords
Cumulative tests come after lessons 10 & 20 (midterm & final). Answers are in the back for easy grading.
This is the pink book and is not reproducible, so be sure each student has their own test book. ~Sara
Wordly Wise 3000 works. It's a vocabulary-building program that grows with the student, and makes vocabulary acquisition interesting and entertaining. Current editions (4th and 3rd) of Wordly Wise 3000 share a similar format giving interesting word histories, dealing with usage issues, and exposing common usage pitfalls. There are 20 lessons in each level plus five review lessons. Typical lessons contain an alphabetized list of fifteen words (fewer words in lower levels) with a brief, dictionary-type entry for each. These include part of speech, concise definition, and proper usage of the word in the context of an interesting sentence that provides a mnemonic anchor for the word. Following are activity sections which vary slightly with the edition. Crossword puzzles and hidden message puzzles are used for review. The overall word list for the series consists of 3000 words; their selection based on frequency, grade-level literature, textbooks, and SAT-prep books. Course components include a Student Book, an Answer Key, a Test Book, and a Teacher Resource Book. Levels K and 1 of both editions differ a bit from Grades 2-12 levels.
Wordly Wise 3000, 4th Edition builds academic vocabulary in a convenient workbook format your student can complete independently. Short, daily lessons provide a variety of opportunities to learn the words, linking reading comprehension with vocabulary instruction.
Within each Wordly Wise vocabulary book:
- Determining Meanings shows dictionary-type definitions with sentences and explains word parts (prefixes, roots, suffixes).
- Making Connections helps students understand word relationships.
- Completing Sentences allows students to demonstrate their understanding.
- Vocabulary in Context is a story intended to strengthen a student’s ability to determine meaning based on usage and includes comprehension questions.
- Vocabulary Extension is found at the end of each lesson and focuses on just one word from that lesson in order to develop a deeper understanding and application.
- Levels 3-12 include 20 vocabulary lessons with 15 words per lesson. Level 2 has only 10 words per lesson.
- Free digital flashcards are available at Quizlet.com for every level.
- Convenient book sets available for every grade level.
Most students will use the consumable Student Workbook with a separate Answer Key (white). An optional Quiz Booklet (pink) is available with lesson tests, cumulative midterms and finals, and test answers. These 3 components make up our Wordly Wise 3000 4th Edition Book Sets.
Teacher Resource Books are set up for classroom use and include guides for the lessons, reproducible tests and reviews, vocab activities (including word webs and semantic maps), options for group or individual vocabulary instruction, pacing options, and answer keys for the tests and workbooks.
Kindergarten and Book 1 are formatted differently with a required Teacher Pack and Student Book. These vocabulary-building activities include selecting the correct picture in the workbook while the parent reads a story aloud from the Teacher Pack. The unique, two-week lesson plans in these beginning books teach and reinforce words and concepts in 20-25 minutes a day. Teacher Packs for K and 1 include extensive lesson plans, Concept and Picture Cards, read-aloud stories and poems, extension and challenge activities, blackline masters, formal and informal vocabulary assessments for each lesson, assessment checklists, and more. These are technically 2nd edition books, although their covers match the 4th edition books.
What’s the difference between the 3rd and 4th editions?
Word lists have remained the same in almost all levels. [Lesson 17 of Book 12 has a different story, but the word list remain the same; and lesson 12 of Book 9 has a different title for the story, but the story is actually the same as in the 3rd edition and uses the same word list.]
Levels 2-12 are a mixture of new activities and those similar to previous editions. Older edition answer keys and teacher resources will not work with the 4th edition Student Books. There are formatting changes as well in the Student Books, which have an updated look. Books 2 and 3 still have 15 lessons (10 words per lesson), and Books 4-12 still have 20 lessons (15 words per lesson).
