This fascinating story was almost lost to history until an older man shared his story with a teacher friend. The older man was the child in the story, Thomas Jefferson Mayfield. Much of the story is in the first person through a child’s eyes as he remembers events in his past. Black and white illustrations are scattered throughout. The tale does get sad as more Americans came to the west in search of gold and land. This is used in a Beautiful Feet guide #066244. ~Sara
