Category Description for Friendly Biology

Facing the high school sciences with an apprehensive learner or overwhelmed home-teacher? Check out this new Biology course from the authors of Friendly Chemistry!

With a goal of teaching high school students the complexity of living things in a gentle, non-intimidating manner, this course goes above and beyond expectations. Presenting a traditional scope of study, sans evolution and natural selection, this text contains 28 lessons, vibrant illustrations, and lab activities for a complete, year-long course. Topically, students will study the characteristics of living things; basic chemistry as it pertains to living things; the roles of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids in living systems; importance of pH in living systems; cytology; mitosis and meiosis; chromosome duplication and protein synthesis; reproduction (asexual and sexual); genetics; taxonomy, including a survey of each kingdom with an emphasis on various classes and orders; an overview of human anatomy and physiology; and the foundations of ecology.

The Student Textbook is available in a Christian Worldview version and a Secular version. Worth mentioning, content is marginally different (scripture references in the Christian Worldview version). Co-ops or classroom students could use the books concurrently with success. Lessons are expected to take one week to complete, with readings from 10-25 pages, so some lessons may need additional time to complete. Textbook readings are accompanied by lab activities. Labs are designed to be homeschool friendly and use household or easily found items. A sampling of lab experiences includes: osmosis with eggs and vegetables, creating a cell model, determining pH, and making butter and yogurt. You will need internet access for the Taxonomy activity. The Textbook includes space for documenting the lab activities although students may wish to make a science notebook. The author is in the process of developing video dissection labs; contact us for availability. No microscope is required for this course.

The Student Workbook is a vital component to this course and works with either version: Secular or Christian Worldview. The 2 worksheets per lesson contain a mix of fill in the blank questions, matching exercises and puzzles. Not reproducible, each child will need their own copy.

A Lesson Tests and Answer Keys book is also available. This contains the lesson tests, test answers and the answer key for the student workbook. Lesson tests contain multiple choice questions and photocopying within one family is permissible per the author.

The Complete Set includes the softcover Textbook, Student Workbook, and unlimited access to the digital Family License Video course.

This course would make an excellent introduction to the author's Friendly Anatomy or to ease struggling students into the high school level sciences to build confidence while learning. All books are soft cover. ~ Deanne

Friendly Biology is VERY friendly!!
I LOVE the "Friendly" science curriculum!! The presentation of the material in an easy-to-understand way is what brought me back for their Biology course. All the books work hand-in-hand for increasing comprehension. The text, although quite thick compared to the Physical Science, presents material in bite-sized pieces--great for the reluctant homeschool science teacher/parent, like me! The text flows nicely and the concepts taught are comparable to a regular biology textbook (except there are no dissections). All experiments are easy on the budget, and most of the materials for the experiments can be easily found in your home or grocery store. Highly recommended!!

Extremely Easy to Use Teacher's Guide
The best thing about the test answer key is that it is very easy to use for the teacher. It follows all the tests, so it is in the middle of the test book, not at the end. All chapter answers are in a well-labeled table with alternating colors in every other column. The lesson tests are completely multiple choice. The multiple choice questions do a good job of addressing the important concepts of the chapter, although the author may consider adding critical thinking problems (for example, in this scenario...) in future editions. I really like the author's brief review (generally at the end of each chapter of the textbook) as I think it helps the student identify what is important.

The answer keys for the student workbook, which contains some short answer questions but mostly fill-in-the-blank worksheets (which my student has found to be very helpful)and crossword puzzles, are also very easy for the teacher to use. One can tell that this curriculum has been taught to real students and used by homeschool teachers before because a lot of the "bugs" are gone.

Why did you choose this?

I have my 10th grader using Friendly Biology and didn't realize the answer key was separate from the text and student books.

friend recommendation

Required resource for Friendly Biology.

I have a twelve year old who is exceptional at science and ready for high school biology, but can't handle the high reading level of some textbooks. I am hoping that this will meet our needs.

How rigorous is this course?
And can the pages be photocopied for siblings?
Thank you!

I have a male student with a reading comprehension disability and he cannot manage large amounts of print. These book are perfect for him . The authors have done a fabulous job of condensing a large subject down to the important and necessary information!! Pictures visuals reinforce what they are learning. My student was capable of doing the work all by himself with minimal help. We liked it so much we did the friendly Physical Science AND we are finished up Friendly Chemistry this year. He needed a lot of help with chemistry but the book helped me to understand it well enough to guide him through the lessons. It is NOT for dummies, just whittled down to accommodate those who struggle with too much information and fluff. Chapter questions are linear according to lesson progression and tests are manageable . I don’t think my student would have “gotten” the sciences without the Hajdas books!!
I highly recommend these books.
I consider everything reproducible if you have a printer so you’ll have to decide. The pages don’t tear out but I m sure you could copy for additional student. I found it easiest to order another student workbook and reuse lesson book and answer book.
Hope that helped?!

Is this version newer than July 2018? I got a used copy somewhere else and it was an "old" edition with errors. Would like to have the updated version. Thanks.

We purchased Textbook (First Edition, Copyright 2017, print date 05 September 2018), Student Workbook (Copyright 2017, print date 16 February 2019), and Lesson Tests And Answer Keys (Copyright 2016, print date 10 March 2019). Note: Copyright is usually what matters, not print date -- print date could be October 2020 and still be the same text from original publishing. Also Note: Only the Textbook has an Edition listed.

May these be copied to be used with multiple students or subsequent students?

You can make copies for use within your own family.

Does the Test and Answer Key have the answers for the student workbook as well or only the answers for the tests?

Yes, the Test and Answer Key book contains the answers for the Student Workbook as well as the Tests.

Do the tests work for both Christian and secular textbook version? Or are there two test books as well?

There is only one test book and only one workbook. Both will work with either the Christian or secular textbook.
