Kit A includes Lesson Books 1–4, lesson mat, movable alphabet (uppercase & lowercase letters plus numbers), quinoa grain, washable large crayons, manipulatives with knobs, Play-Doh®, and language songs. By the completion of this level, students will be reading CVC words.

Book 1 introduces the use of Montessori Shapes (rectangle and triangle) that include their own frame and a knob to more easily pick shapes up. This book teaches the letters c, m, a, t, s, r, I, p, and words that start with each letter; statements vs questions; how to tell and retell stories and narrate from pictures; to be aware of your voice volume; and Mother Goose Rhymes.

Book 2 teaches words that start with letters f, o, g, h, j, u, l, d, and w; Montessori shapes like the pentagon, oval, square, and trapezoid; holding the pencil using the tripod grip; practicing patterns; and listening and discussing using the included books, like Mother Goose.

Book 3 teaches the letters e, n, k, q, v, x, y, and z; comparatives; patterns; proper pencil holding and use; developing peripheral vision; storytelling; and vocabulary (colors, days of the week, emotions, nouns, shapes, and weather).

Book 4 reviews letters, sounds, and rhymes and practices patterns and shapes like the trapezoid and quatrefoil. Students will read and create CVC words. Students will practice handwriting, using peripheral vision, personal communication, and pronunciation. Near the end of this book, students will have several lessons on vocabulary, including parts of speech. Students end with a lesson on rhyming using Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18.

Category Description for Shiller Learning Language Arts

Based on the three-point instruction method (“this is,” “show me,” and “what is?”), this program covers phonics, reading instruction, and a combination of language arts skills, including parts of speech, retelling stories, sharing emotions, touch typing, rhyming, describing, making comparisons, giving directions, identifying sonnets, and much more. Lessons are open-and-go, requiring no preparation, and vary in length and complexity.

There is also great variety in the content, which is why the teacher is encouraged to skip lessons if the student is not ready for its content. Since one of the basic premises of Montessori education is that children are natural learners, the teacher's role is to provide a learning-friendly environment and the proper tools. Students are usually the best gauge of their own competence and will know when they have closure on a topic, so be prepared to be flexible and sensitive. The back cover of each lesson book can be used to record when a lesson is completed.

Why did you choose this?

I use Shiller Math and LOVE IT!

I'm homeschooling my children for the first time this year. They've both had 2 years of Montessori schooling and I'd like to continue that as much as possible at home.

I purchased the Shiller Language Arts curriculum because it uses the Montessori method of education.

Hello! Shiller Language Arts provides a 30-day trial with their Language Arts kit. Is there a trial period option through Rainbow Resources, too? Thank you!

You may only return unused materials for a full refund within 30 days.

How long does the average lesson take?

ShillerLearning: Montessori at Home recommends doing activities for 15 minutes a day with a 3-or-4-year-olds and add 5 minutes a day for each year of age after (20 minutes a day with a 5-year-old, 25 minutes a day with a 6-year-old).
