Description

Phonics instruction integrated with Bible stories and verses. Is a well-done program with these characteristics exactly what you're looking for? Master Books has introduced an easy-to-use program with straight-forward lessons and little prep for the teacher. Starting with letter recognition it proceeds through short vowels, long vowels, and some digraphs. Both letter sounds and printing letter strokes are taught.

Organization is not typical (N, D, A, T, S, P). The accompanying narratives are in biblical chronological order, however. Daily lessons introduce letters with a biblical narrative (N is for nothing, none, not even a bit! Genesis 1:1-2) and a Bible verse. The lesson/narrative is scripted for the teacher and includes questions for the student, finger tracing, listening, identifying words with the letter sound, and reading practice followed by a worksheet for the student to complete. Bonus (optional) activities are provided to use as needed and time permits. Introductory material for the teacher includes general instruction, a writing readiness assessment, sight words for each lesson, helpful hints for teaching the lessons, a materials list, a daily lesson schedule (5 days a week for 18 weeks), and a progress chart. There are periodic reviews.

This is a one semester course for either Kindergarten or First Grade. It seems like the publisher may be planning a sequel but if not this is an excellent standalone and will get your student off to a good start. ~ Janice

Excellent Beginning Reading/Phonics
I started this with my kindergartner who knew no letters. Each day he’s learning a new sound and they’ve structured it to help him learn to read small words with the new sounds. He is gaining so much confidence. Definitely recommend.

Foundation Phonics
One of my favourite things about raising and educating my own children is teaching them to read. Foundation Phonics is the perfect resource to help parents with this task. It is easy to follow and full of creative and engaging ways to make reading fun. Not only will this help you teach your child to read and write, but your child will get foundational understanding of Biblical history and salvation from creation to Christ. This is available in a PDF version too.

The Masterbooks recommended order for a gentle introduction to reading is using Simply K (published by Masterbooks) in kindergarten, which teaches letter names. Then Foundation Phonics in the first half of first grade, which teaches phonics and then Language Lessons for a Living Education 1 (published by Masterbooks) in the second half.

Wonderful beginning reading/writing course
We loved this course. It takes you through the letter sounds with Biblical phrases from Creation to the Resurrection of Christ. I enjoyed sharing those phrases with my child. I really appreciated that for every letter sound there is 1. scripted instruction 2. worksheets 3. hands on activity suggestions and 4. a materials list. It was so adaptable, I knew that I didn't need to do all of it. It was wonderful to just be able to plan an activity with the materials so easily. The book suggestions were also really nice. The author definitely went above and beyond with resources to get the most out of this curriculum.

More than just Phonics
This book truly helped my child to not only learn some phonics, but moreover to learn about God. We had so many deep conversations during going through this book. We both were bittersweet when we finished it. My child loved it and was sad to be done with it. Foundations Phonics built his confidence in reading and strengthened his interest in God. It was one of the stepping stones for his introduction to salvation. It truly touched his young heart.

This Language Arts curriculum is a blessing to our family, and we are truly grateful for it!

A great foundation!
This book, as with all Masterbooks curricula, makes it so easy for the parent to teach the material. This book includes everything you can choose to do to set up for the year, and a comprehensive, easy to follow schedule. Each lesson is short enough that kids won't lose focus, teaches the concept and provides a tie-in to Scripture, and has a short worksheet, including coloring, printing and word work. Fun options include a page of different shape lines to follow to build pencil coordination (could also be copied and used with scissors as well!), optional additional exercises to do with some of the lessons that will further illuminate the concept, and excellent pacing for children to feel they have done well on a daily basis. Recommend!

Why did you choose this?

Looking for as many phonics and/or reading mastery resources as possible to see how my kids learn best

I like the way it teaches how to write the letters, very similar to how I learned as a child. The lessons and activities seem like ones my hands-on, very active son will enjoy.

recommended by homeschool conference online

seems like a great place to start with my 4 year old

Does this come in color? When I look at the samples on Masterbooks website its in color, but this one appears to have pages that are only in black and white.

The books we are currently stocking in our warehouse are in color. We'll be updating the graphics. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
