Description

Subtitled, A History of the Golden State for Intermediate Grades, this guide includes approximately 80 lessons highlighting this state's unique history and nature. This adaptable curriculum allows you to finish in a year (with 2-3 lessons weekly), or at a faster pace. Chapter books are the primary resources, enhanced with picture books. These books and the Teacher guide are the main components; with nature studies, timeline figures, poetry memorization and mapwork the main activities. Each lesson will highlight a book with discussion questions, periodic vocabulary drill, map work, “Nature" and “Culinary Connections" activities, and journaling in their notebook about a specific animal. Journaling can also include other topics learned, and recording lines from the multi-stanza poem, “The California Story" (included). The back of the guide includes answers to the book discussion questions, a 2-page CA map, and brown-lined nature and timeline pictures. Photocopy and/or cut these out and color for notebooking and other projects. Includes ideas for field trips across the state.

Books required for this study include The Discovery of the Americas, Once Upon a Mastadon; California Indians; Island of the Blue Dolphins; Adopted by Indians; The Cruise of the Arctic Star; Junipero Serra: Founder of the California Missions; Song of the Swallows; and Patty Reed's Doll: the Story of the Donner Party; By the Great Horn Spoon!; John Muir;Locomotive; With Open Hands: A Story about Biddy Mason; Blue Willow; Esperanza Rising; Who Was Walt Disney?; Who Was Steve Jobs?; and The Forest in the Trees. In addition, each unit includes a “Library Connection" listing additional resources (with descriptions) for further study.

To complete the Charlotte Mason notebooking assignments, the study recommends sturdy, acid-free notebooks that will lay flat. In addition, you will need a set of good quality colored or watercolor pencils, watercolors, fine quality paint brushes in varying sizes, 90# watercolor paper, medium weight drawing paper, rubber cement (although any crafting-grade glue stick should do nicely), a watercolor mixing palette, and a fine-tipped drawing pen to embellish the notebook and record what you've learned. 8 1/2"x 11", 132 pgs, pb. ~ Ruth
