This book,
along with the online portion and answer key, is essential to this course.
Before you jump into lesson 1, this course has a section called the 10 Steps.
The purpose is for the student to get comfortable with the look and sounds of
this new language. If you have had some previous exposure, it may take you 1-2
weeks. If you are new to the language, the 10 Steps can take as long as you
need to get comfortable. You are not writing anything at this time, so relax
and soak it in. When you do begin lesson 1, you will notice that the
expectation is for you to really dig into the language. Still, Level 1 is
for a beginner. Take your time, use the video lessons as a model, and you will
find yourself progressing as things click. Don’t be scared of the vocabulary
and grammar presented off the bat, this is a normal, high school level course.
Handy verb charts in the back are a quick reference, and dictionary pages that
are both Spanish to English and English to Spanish will get lots of use.

Publisher's Description of Breaking the Spanish Barrier Level 1 (Beginner) Student Book
The level 1 book assumes no prior knowledge of Spanish. It starts from the very beginning by introducing simple words and phrases that can be used right away.
The "First Steps" lesson also presents all the sounds of the Spanish language so that students can develop an authentic accent. Theme-based vocabulary offers students opportunities to learn words relevant to their daily lives at home, school, and beyond.
An action-packed dialogue series appears throughout the book offering students reading and listening comprehension practice.
Throughout the chapters, easy-to-understand explanations unravel these essential building blocks of language:
nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, conjunctions, and prepositions
the present, preterite, imperfect, and progressive tenses
Level 1 (Beginner) requires no prior language experience but getting used to new sounds and spellings can take practice. After an introduction, this level covers nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, present/preterite/imperfect/progressive tenses, and formal commands. Students may want to take some time with the introduction until they are comfortable with the sounds of the language, then proceed to the actual lessons.
