  • Designed for use before the Explode the Code series
  • The third of 3 preliteracy primer books geared for pre-K through Grade 1
  • Introduces initial consonant sounds (c, g, l, q, v, w, y, z, x)
  • Multisensory activities promote fine motor skills, letter formation, phonemic awareness, and sound-letter correspondence
Description

Go for the Code “C” is the third of three Orton-Gillingham based preliteracy primers which together (A, B, & C) introduce the consonant letters, preparing students for Explode the Code workbooks 1-8. This workbook “C” focuses on lowercase consonants c, g, l, q, v, w, y, z, and x (their capitals taught briefly) and their sound-symbol relationships. Cute black-and-white illustrations are paired with fun activities kids love, such as matching, tracing, saying, coloring, and copying letters, pictures, and their sounds. Lesson pages follow a predictable pattern, allowing children to work independently much of the time while building foundational reading skills such as left-to-right tracking, fine motor and hand-eye coordination, and visual and auditory discrimination. Each lesson does include a 2-page section of auditory exercises requiring the teacher to read directions from one side of the student book while the student listens and works on the other side. For example, “I am thinking of a very large wild animal that has a mane and roars. What is its name?” (Student locates picture and says “lion.”) “Put your finger on the lion. Say the sound you hear at the beginning of lion. Draw a piece of meat for the lion to eat.”  This invaluable training helps children learn to listen carefully and follow directions. There is one Teacher’s Guide for Books A, B, and C that expands on the skills presented in the student books (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, writing practice) with step-by-step instructions for multisensory reinforcement. Some of these activities use the colorful Wall Chart with felt objects and activity book and the Picture-Letter Cards.  110 pgs. sc. ~Nancie

Category Description for Explode The Code

Explode the Code is a proven Orton-Gillingham based program using systematic phonics instruction with multisensory activities. Students progress through the workbooks and build essential reading skills, including phonological and phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, writing, and more. Designed to cover skills ranging from preschool to 4th grade, the workbooks are organized by skill level without grade levels printed on the covers. This makes them perfect for remediation as well as for beginning readers, since older children can progress confidently without the pressure of feeling behind. There are three sets of workbooks that loosely correlate with the following grades:

  • Preliteracy Primers: Get Ready for the Code, Get Set for the Code, and Go for the Code are all perfect for preschool through 1st grade.
  • Explode the Code: Books 1-3 are ideal for 1st grade and books 4-6 are great for 2nd grade. Books 7 and 8 are excellent for 3rd and 4th graders. There are also 1/2 level books between each level that provide extra practice before moving up.
  • Beyond the Code: Book 1 for Grade 1, Book 2 for Grade 2, Book 3 for Grades 2-3, and Book 4 for Grades 3-4.

Explode the Code books are a perfect supplement to use alongside any phonics program, providing practice worksheets to reinforce skills step-by-step whether in preschool, kindergarten, or beyond! If using as a full phonics curriculum, the Teacher’s Guide rounds out the program, offering scripted lesson plans with detailed instructions for teaching concepts, and various suggestions for activities and skill reinforcement (some activities use the optional Wall Chart with Activity Book or Card Set). Includes differentiation tips for learning styles, group sizes, and English language learners, along with Answer Keys.

The Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code, A, B, and C student workbooks provides pre-literacy instruction and reinforcing exercises with a focus on visual identification of consonants, their written lowercase letter forms and their sound-symbol relationships. Each lesson addresses the principles of effective reading instruction and follows the same easy-to-use format. The Teachers Guide is required for providing listening exercises.

The Teachers Guide for Workbooks A, B and C expands on the skills presented in these books, providing teachers with various options for instruction and reinforcement. The wide variety of activities may be adapted for whole-class, small-group, and one-on-one learning situations.

The 60 Picture-Letter Cards can be used for supplementary visual and auditory work and match key words in the student workbooks. Letter cards allow students to practice letter identification and recognition. Picture-letter combination cards help students map sounds to symbols. Use with Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code, A, B, and C workbooks.

The Workbooks, Explode The Code Books 1-8 focus on Phonemic Awareness, Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension, and Writing. All workbooks have several review lessons and a posttest. Explode The Code Half Books (1 -6 ) focus on more practice and reinforcement with skills in workbooks 1-6.

Code Cards (1 card for every concept introduced in Books 1-3.) include suggestions for daily practice activities and games. Each card is marked with the book and page number on the concept, which it is introduced.

Teachers Guides (Books 1-8) incorporate a quick review, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension in every lesson. Suggestions for writing practice and differentiated instruction are provided for each lesson. Specific answers to the student pages are not offered, as the book assumes student and teacher will be completing these together. However, answers for pre-test and post-test questions are included. Please also note these books only cover the "whole" levels, not the 1/2 levels.

Explode The Code Placement Tests are designed to assess students encoding and decoding skills. All tests can be given in either a group setting or individually, with the exception of Test 4, which must be administered individually. Included are directions for administering and analyzing results; answer keys and reproducible test forms.
