Description
Start kids off on the right track with early literacy skills from Get Ready for the Code “A” ! This is the first of three Orton-Gillingham based preliteracy primers which together (A, B, & C) introduce the consonant letters, preparing students for Explode the Code workbooks 1-8. This book “A” focuses on lowercase consonants b, f, k, m, r, and t (their capitals taught briefly) and their sound-symbol relationships. Children love completing activities such as matching, tracing, drawing, saying, coloring, and copying letters, pictures, and their sounds with simple (but cute!) black-and-white illustrations. Lesson pages follow a predictable pattern, allowing children to work independently much of the time, while building foundational reading skills such as left-to-right tracking, fine motor and hand-eye coordination, and visual and auditory discrimination. Each lesson does include a 2-page spread of auditory exercises requiring the teacher to read directions from one side of the student book while the student listens and works on the other side. For example, “I am thinking of something you wear on your feet to keep them warm and dry. What are they called?” (Student locates picture and says “boots.”) “Put your finger on the boots. What sound do you hear at the beginning of boots? Color the boots.” This invaluable training helps children learn to listen carefully and follow directions. There is one Teacher’s Guide for Books A, B, and C that expands on the skills presented in the student books (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, writing practice). Various options for multisensory instruction and reinforcement are suggested, some using the colorful Wall Chart with felt objects and activity book and the Picture-Letter Cards. The Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code, A, B, and C student workbooks provides pre-literacy instruction and reinforcing exercises with a focus on visual identification of consonants, their written lowercase letter forms and their sound-symbol relationships. Each lesson addresses the principles of effective reading instruction and follows the same easy-to-use format. The Teachers Guide is required for providing listening exercises.
The Teachers Guide for Workbooks A, B and C expands on the skills presented in these books, providing teachers with various options for instruction and reinforcement. The wide variety of activities may be adapted for whole-class, small-group, and one-on-one learning situations.
The 60 Picture-Letter Cards can be used for supplementary visual and auditory work and match key words in the student workbooks. Letter cards allow students to practice letter identification and recognition. Picture-letter combination cards help students map sounds to symbols. Use with Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code, A, B, and C workbooks.
The Workbooks, Explode The Code Books 1-8 focus on Phonemic Awareness, Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension, and Writing. All workbooks have several review lessons and a posttest. Explode The Code Half Books (1 -6 ) focus on more practice and reinforcement with skills in workbooks 1-6.
Code Cards (1 card for every concept introduced in Books 1-3.) include suggestions for daily practice activities and games. Each card is marked with the book and page number on the concept, which it is introduced.
Teachers Guides (Books 1-8) incorporate a quick review, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension in every lesson. Suggestions for writing practice and differentiated instruction are provided for each lesson. Specific answers to the student pages are not offered, as the book assumes student and teacher will be completing these together. However, answers for pre-test and post-test questions are included. Please also note these books only cover the "whole" levels, not the 1/2 levels.
Explode The Code Placement Tests are designed to assess students encoding and decoding skills. All tests can be given in either a group setting or individually, with the exception of Test 4, which must be administered individually. Included are directions for administering and analyzing results; answer keys and reproducible test forms.

The Code program is working very well for us so far, and this serves as a great intro to letter recognition, with wonderful cognitive puzzles to solve that are just right for preschool through early Kindergarten!

Great for introducing letters to 5 year old
I was recommended this book by a relative and I am so glad we choose to try it. My 5 year old loves it! We have already finished book A and we are almost done with book B. He loves the repetition of the activities in this book, he has a couple he really looks forward to doing and always asks to do more than a page or 2 a day. It is easy to follow along to and the pictures are not complicated or too fancy that your child will be distracted. I am so pleased with this series and look forward to completed the explode the code series with my son. I also want to add that I love that as we moved forward with the new letters the book gradually adds the newly learned letters in with the activities so there is a constant reviewing as you keep going.

My daughter loves to color, so this is the perfect fit for her. It includes letter names, sounds, and writing. It focuses more on the lowercase letters than the capital letters, because they are more commonly seen in print. I wish it did include a bit more of the capital letters. Every section has a review of the previously learned letters. We do a daily review with flashcards, but I love that the review is also included in the workbook! A great value. Quick and easy for kindergarten

This program worked wonderfully for my son when he was 3-4 (now six) and I'm continuing to use it for my next three year old!
I've used this for kids to start them on learning how to read and it works very well!
These books are great to help students understand the letter/sound connection.
