Description

Fulfilling the GCE “O” Chemistry syllabus requirements, the Chemistry Matters Practical Book provides carefully arranged experiments to build skills progressively. Beginning with important lab safety rules and the important skills necessary for success in chemistry, this book includes 36 experiments related to the chapters in the Chemistry Matters Textbook.  Each experiment begins with the skills to be learned and the theory being tested, followed by a list of required lab supplies and chemicals and step-by-step instructions. After the experiment is completed, students record results and answer questions about the activity. Additional lab supplies are required, and most may be purchased from a quality science supply company like Home Science Tools. Homeschool families may choose to omit some experiments that utilize specialized lab equipment. Additionally, if the GCE “O” Chemistry test is not the goal, families could consider substituting the Practical Book with a separate resource like the “Illustrated Guide to Home Chemistry Experiments.”

Publisher's Description of Chemistry Matters Practical Book (2nd Edition)

Chemistry Matters Practical Book is the practical companion to the revised best-selling Chemistry Matters textbook. Designed to enrich learning and develop investigative and practical skills, this complete practical course is written in line with the Singapore 2013 GCE Ordinary Level Chemistry syllabus from the Ministry of Education, Singapore.

Enriches learning

  • - The improved experiments facilitate the hands-on learning that reinforces understanding of fundamental Chemistry concepts.
  • - Investigations on daily contexts stimulate scientific inquiry.
  • - Questions after the experiment help students relate theory to practice.
  • - Data logger experiments familiarise students with the use of technology in research.

Promotes good laboratory practices

  • - Notes at the beginning of the book explain how and why of good experimental techniques and safe laboratory conduct.
  • - Pointers at relevant parts of the experiment remind students of safety precautions and highlight proper laboratory techniques.

Develops practical techniques and investigative skills

  • - Notes on Volumetric Analysis and Qualitative Analysis provide details on these experimental procedures. Pointers highlight important tips, common mistakes that should be avoided, and explain the reasons behind them.
  • - The scaffolded arrangement of experiments builds skills progressively

Students learn to

  • -- perform experiments and make accurate records;
  • -- interpret observations, process data and draw conclusions;
  • -- plan and carry out investigations, evaluate their methods, and suggest improvements.
  • - A list of skills at the start of each experiment details the essential skills that students need to demonstrate in that practical.
  • - A variety of experiments covering various techniques allows students to gain confidence in different experimental setups
