Description

The Riot and the Dance: Foundational Biology, takes a different approach to life science. It is from a Biblical worldview, with a tongue and cheek humor appreciated by some. There are two parts to the book - The Living Cell and Diversity of Life (29 chapters in all). Since a lot of chemistry takes place in the life sciences, the author begins by reviewing the basics of chemistry - good idea! He teaches about atoms and bonding and other basics that will help your student better understand the processes occurring in living things. Black and white illustrations are scattered throughout the text, along with some colored photos to help the reader better understand concepts. Each chapter concludes with a set of review questions that are based on chapter content. A downloadable Answer Key is available at the Teacher Notes PDF on our website, or through the publisher’s website. The language and explanations used in the text are pretty straightforward to ease understanding and Bible references are used throughout to show the relationship between science and the Bible. Appendices include A Creationist Manifesto, Natural Selection, and a Periodic Table of the Elements. This curriculum written by Dr. Gordon Wilson and published by Canon Press takes you systematically and humorously through biomolecules; history of microscopy; introduction to cell basics; organelles of the Eukaryotic cell; basics of metabolism; photosynthesis; cellular respiration; DNA and genes; DNA technology and genetic modification; mitosis; meiosis; and basics of Mendelian Genetics.

Publisher's Description of Riot and the Dance Foundational Biology Student Text
New hardback version is available now!

With over 130 original illustrations and several hundred figures total, this book is first and foremost an approachable and readable explanation of the basics of biology. But Dr. Wilson doesn't dumb down the concepts, either. Using analogies, anecdotes, and simple, personable language, Dr. Wilson teaches students the bottom-line themes and key details of biology. The Riot and the Dance is not a pile of disconnected facts: it is an integrated foundation for understanding biological life, and it will stir up curiosity about all life from fungus firearms to familiar vertebrates—that, along with a greater desire to praise the Creator of it all.

In "Part 1: The Living Cell," you will be introduced to:

  • the basics of cellular and molecular biology, including the "motors" of flagella and other awe-inspiring nano-machines
  • the "how and why" of photosynthesis, cellular respiration, the central dogma, mitosis, meiosis, recombinant DNA technology, and Mendelian genetics, and more...

In "Part 2: The Diversity of Life," you will be taken on a fascinating tour of:

  • the major phyla and classes of all of the six taxonomic kingdoms
  • important concepts in the creation/evolution debate
  • an exciting survey of God's living handiwork, including the tiny, deadly Trypanosoma, fungus firearms, sedentary sponges, bizarre echinoderms and unfamiliar facts about the lifecycles and habits of familar vertebrates and plants
  • the basics of ecology, such as symbiotic relationships, food webs, and the interdependency of life
  • a biblical approach to conservation, and much more...

Rather than teaching a pile of disconnected facts about biology, Gordon Wilson gives the reader a foundational knowledge of living things alongside his primary goal, which is to stir up a long-lasting wonder and curiosity about life and a greater desire to praise the Creator.

Each chapter of the book includes some review questions. For educators and homeschoolers, we have created a pdf with all the answers to the review questions which you can download here.

The Teacher Guide is the quiz and exam companion for the course. Divided by chapters and objectives are stated. One quiz per chapter and one exam per unit are printed on perforated pages for easier access (quizzes and tests are non-reproducible). Quizzes consist of fill-in-the-blank, short answer, drawing, labeling, naming, listing and multiple choice. Unit exams are a review of the chapters and include many of the same questions as the quizzes - review is key in this program. The answer keys for quizzes and exams are found at the back of the teacher guide.

The Lab Manual offers a suggested schedule to get you started - five days a week for 32 weeks. There are 25 labs and each includes a materials list, objectives, written exercises and lab instruction. You will need a compound microscope, glass slides and cover slips, methylene blue - just to mention a few (give us a call for the complete list). There are no suggested answers for the activities in the lab manual. Information and answers would need to be found within the labs or the textbook. ~ Donna

Great bio text
My son read this for 10th grade biology and he loved it. It's very detailed information but great for an independent student. We assigned Darwin's Origin of the Species along with Wilson's content guide at the same time.

Too wordy and complex
This is not the biology textbook for you. Too wordy and complex. The text is bogged down with explanations that contain WAY too much information and you lose sight of what you're trying to learn. Even a veteran science teacher CANNOT stand this textbook.

Fantastic biology text book!
Outstanding book! High-level information, but really easy to understand. This does not "dumb down" the material...and it's all presented through the lens of a Christian worldview. Great product! And Wilson's accompanying nature documentaries are fantastic as well!

All I was hoping for!!
I used another popular biology curriculum for my older son but switched to this for my second son. The language is alive and engaging. The format and drawings are neat and pleasing, mostly black and white pencil drawings - not visually “busy” like other texts. My son LOVES IT. Best curriculum purchase of the year, hands down.

A More Natural Read
After struggling with a popular high school Biology, my daughter was tired (and so was I) of going through the motions of getting something done just to check the box and not even understanding it. So, I went searching to see what other programs were out there. Up popped The Riot and the Dance. I am so glad we switched. The illustrations are not as detailed as other programs (which I think would help to get a point across), but the author writes in a very natural way-gives many analogies, writes with humor, explains hard terms and concepts. This program is going much better than the previous. I think it would be really great if the company considered offering an audio mp3 or cd for auditory learners.

Why did you choose this?

this is what the teacher required for the class my son is taking

Homeschool Co-op.

Needed for biology class

Does this curriculum correlate at all with the documentary?

This is a super detailed, almost college level biology textbook. My son absolutely loved it. The documentary seems to be more fun stuff to watch, but does not seem to follow the textbook.

Would you recommend this course for a student planning on going into a career in science?

While I cannot answer your question directly, our high school aged daughter found it both challenging and captivating. She used the book in conjunction with a classical education co-op that produces college ready students, including those who go into science based fields.

can you count the full curriculum as 1 credit for biology?

It is a full year of high school biology, yes.

Is there an audio of the book?

There wasn't as of last year. It DID have links to YouTube videos, but not very many. That would've really helped my audio book reader! Enter

Is there a lab supply list available?

Yes and no. It's not comprehensive for the entire course. Each lab lesson has a clearly marked list of supplies needed. However, since some of them will require ordering online, you'll want to look ahead. We didn't. :)
