Poetry & Short Stories for the Logic Stage Student Guide, Second Edition
This Student Guide is designed to be used with Poetry & Short Stories for the Logic Stage Anthology, 2nd Edition (002629) and gives the student a step-by-step plan for using it with the text. The student work is comprehensive including reading notes, vocabulary work, and plenty of comprehension and discussion questions, as well as essay options for each reading selection. Instructors are encouraged to adapt these activities as needed. Using the classical trivium, workbook exercises will lead the student through the three stages of learning for each reading selection… grammar, logic, and rhetoric. Students begin by learning the basic elements of each story or poem (grammar stage), then use Socratic questioning to reason with the facts and draw out truth (logic stage). Finally, students communicate that truth, referred to as the “Central One Idea”, to others (rhetoric stage). Answers are contained in the Poetry & Short Stories for the Logic Stage Teacher Guide (002629). 160 pgs, pb. ~Nancie
About the Poetry & Short Stories for the Logic Stage course:
- In the formative years of America at the turn of the nineteenth century, the new nation was painfully aware that it lacked a body of literature that could express the unique, developing American culture. Early American Romanticist Washington Irving was the first to answer this call, soon followed by the beloved Fireside Poets, Edgar Allan Poe with his macabre psychological tales, the unconventional Emily Dickinson, and many others who have since been enshrined in the canon of American literature. This collection from the first two centuries of American literature gives students a solid foundation in understanding some of the most important and influential poems and short stories from this time period, and the accompanying study guides lead students in analysis and a deep appreciation of each.
Sept 2022: Poetry & Short Stories: American Literature switched to Poetry & Short Stories for the Logic Stage. The two are not compatible.
Study includes pre-reading, vocabulary, comprehension questions, determining central idea, and essay topics. Brief timelines, descriptions of each era, and short bios of the poets are included. Book includes selections to be studied from Irving, Poe, Longfellow, Whittier, Holmes, Dickinson, Sandburg, Frost, and others.
