The four main areas of study for first grade are:
- The concepts of addition and subtraction, and strategies for addition and subtraction facts (chapters 1-2; chapter 4);
- Developing understanding of whole number relationships and place value till 100 (chapter 3 and chapter 7);
- Developing understanding of measuring lengths as iterating length units (chapter 6); and
- Reasoning about attributes of geometric shapes, such as the number of sides and the number of corners, and composing and decomposing geometric shapes (chapter 6).
Additional topics we study in first grade are clock to the half hour (chapter 5) and counting coins (chapter 8).

Fantastic!
This curriculum is great! I have used it with 6 of my 7 children and it has been fantastic. You can't abandon the child and expect them to read the instructions on their own, especially in Grade 1. By the time the child is a strong reader, they are pretty much on their own unless they want to ask questions of clarification. The instructions and explanations are brief and to the point, teaching mathematical concepts masterfully. The writer of the curriculum really understands math. My children have done so well using the program and have excelled in state testing once we switched to this curriculum. I am VERY pleased and never look elsewhere anymore! I had used *several* other well-known math curricula, but will never be in that quandary again!

This curriculum is a life saver!
After teaching high school English for 13 years, I stayed resigned to homeschool my children. Since my specialty was language arts, I was worried that I would not be able to teach math to my son and daughter very well. Other parents told me about Math Mammoth, and it is really, truly a life-saver! All of the instruction is embedded in the lesson and is clearly written, so the student can read and work through it themselves if needed. The material follows a LOGICAL PROGRESSION and reviews previous material, too. Maria Miller teaches students to think about a concept several different ways, which is so helpful in developing their mental math ability. My son and daughter are so much more advanced in their mathematical understanding and ability than I was at their ages, and this curriculum is the reason why. It is SO EASY TO USE, and Maria has free instructional videos for many of the lessons in case students need a "classroom teacher" style explanation. I can't say it enough-- Math Mammoth saved my homeschooling life.

LOVE
My daughter used to cry every time we did math. NOT ANY MORE! Simple, easy to understand directions for both parent and child. Great links to free content and games. My daughter is flying through her make up work for first grade (we were a little behind because she struggled with the original program we were using and it just made things worse).
We had only used it about 3 weeks and I ended up purchasing grades 1-7 on cd! Do not waste your money on more expensive curriculums. Math Mammoth is wonderful!

Is this version in color?
Not this one, but if needed we just color the pictures. Generally not necessary as the objects are shaded differently so you can tell which is which.
I really like how these are open-and-go lessons.
I chose this one because I have it for my other daughter. I enjoyed her format and ability to work through fairly easy.
love this curriculum, not super repetitive, teaches different ways of doing math and the lesson/teaching part is in the same book
Two other curriculums weren't a good fit for my son. Math Mammoth looked more his learning style.
