Blue Willow: A Great Depression Book About Honesty and Generosity
Janey and her family are very poor. They move to a one room shack; they are just renting the shack. Bounce Reyburn collects the rent, then gives it to Mr. Anderson, the owner of the house. One day Janeys mother gets sick. When Bounce Reyburn comes to collect the rent, they cannot pay. He takes their only treasure, a blue willow plate. Janeys family gets ready to go because they cant pay the rent. Janey goes to say good-by to the willow plate. When she asks Mr. Anderson, the owner of the house, if she can see it, he says that he never saw the plate. He fires Bounce Reyburn who didnt give the rent to him. Janeys father gets hired instead. Janey and her family do not move. They also get the willow plate back.
I like how Janey and her family are poor and grow rich. I like how Janey has a gentle, generous friend. Lupe, Janeys friend, gives her prize to Janey: a free ride on the ferris wheel at the fair.
I recommend this book for young kids that like fairs, rivers, and heat. I do not recommend this book for people that have just begun to read. This book teaches generosity and honesty.
