Description

From the Old Testament, ancient Greece and Rome, to the dawn of the Renaissance, this course will help your student gain insight into how music is used, and has been used, in Christian worship. The music is the focus, but historical figures and geography will help you track the development of music. The main instruction comes on DVD (almost 9 hours worth) with a spiral-bound student text and a separate booklet with assignments/quizzes. Much of the course comes from Benedictine monks and the Catholic Latin Mass as the basis for study of Protestant hymns, the Anglican tradition, and modern Praise worship. The author/teacher, Carol Reynolds, takes you on a fascinating and insightful journey through abbeys and temples. You will learn the parts of a Catholic mass, which is full of tradition, and the music that accompanied prayer. But it's not an exclusive “Catholic study". Music enthusiasts will find the history enlightening as they make connections to music they recognize. In the student text, a section called “Who's Who" followed by a glossary of terms would be good research topics beyond the course. The assignment/quiz book is broken into 12 units, each with writing activities and guidelines for listening. Answers come from both the video and the text. Quizzes have 10-14 questions and an answer key is in the back of the assignment/quiz book. This course counts as a half-credit for your high school electives. Text is 144pp, Assignments/Quiz book is 88pp, soft cover, spiral bound. ~Sara
