Our Great Big World
- God-centered world geography curriculum written specifically for elementary children
- Ninety lessons (three per week) take about 30-45 minutes each
- Topics covered include the Artic and Antarctica, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Oceania, North America, Mexico and Central America, the Caribbean, and South America
Beautifully illustrated, the Our Great Big World Textbook was written to give homeschool families a glimpse into the magnificent world and peoples that God created. While the focus is geography, along the way students also learn history, music, art, and literature. There are 90 lessons divided into 30 units (3 lessons per unit). Each unit should take one week to complete, with each lesson taking 30-45 minutes. Alongside vibrant photographs, the text is written in a way that is understandable for elementary children. Each lesson concludes with numerous activities. Activities include finding the studied region on a globe, completing the lesson review questions, creative writing, and mapping activities, among others. While parents are encouraged to complete all the activities, this can be flexible for your family, for example, doing the lesson review or creative writing activities orally with younger children. Every unit concludes with a family activity that will create family memories through recipes, crafts, games, or other special projects. You will need to provide miscellaneous craft and art supplies, recipe ingredients, etc. These are listed with the activity so you can easily gather them ahead of time. Scripture references (NASB) are found throughout. Recommended literature complements the lessons in the text. While recommended to help the regions come alive, families may choose to modify or skip these recommendations. Our Great Big World is a delightful introduction to world geography for the younger ones in your family. I love how easy it is to use, with each lesson containing a short read, gorgeous illustrations, and concluding activities. This is a great course for siblings close in age to learn geography together. Please note, each child will need their own consumable Student Atlas, Lesson Review Book, and Coloring Book.
Introduce children to the sights and sounds of Our Great Big World with this God-centered, beautifully illustrated, and engagingly written world geography curriculum. There are 90 lessons for one year of study, at a pace of 3 lessons per week. Each lesson includes a short reading (about 15 minutes to read aloud), followed by comprehension questions from the Lesson Review Book, a globe activity, and a related mapping activity from the Altas Workbook. Additional activities vary and may include coloring pages, a read-aloud literature selection, a folktale or song, or other related activity. Once a week (or after every 3 lessons) there is a family activity suggestion. These activities range from craft projects to games. Easy-to-find craft supplies are necessary. You will also need a globe and access to the internet with a connected device (smart phone/tablet/computer) to listen to the songs and folktales that accompany the text through a QR code (or link). The program also includes 7 recommended literature titles to introduce children to different regions of our world.
There are several components necessary for Our Great Big World. The hardcover Student Textbook, hardcover Folktales and Songs book, the softcover Answer Key and Literature Guide, and the softcover consumable student Lesson Review, Atlas Workbook, and Coloring Books. Components are available individually or sold together in a complete Curriculum Package.
