Description

If you are looking for a decidedly secular yet comprehensive guide to middle grades geography, here you go! Both physical and human geography (also called cultural geography) are included. Highlights of the physical geography include: the Earth is about 4.6 billion years old, Pangea, latitude/longitude, maps/globes, water cycle, weather/climate, continents, rivers/oceans, and more. Global warming is assumed, and you will find melting glaciers, severe drought, animal migration, and extreme weather attributed to it. Readers are encouraged to do what they can to help the slow progress of global warming. When students get to human geography, readers study topics such as the Neolithic (New Stone Age), rise of cities, pollution, agriculture, why we should recycle, plastics, etc. The text itself has a rather informational tone, but there are sections called Fun Facts scattered throughout. A third part includes identifying countries on a MAP YOU PROVIDE. There are also quizzes over information found in this book and using your own resources (perhaps a world atlas or encyclopedia). Answers are provided. Reproducible for single classroom/family use. ~Sara

Publisher's Description of Guide To Geography

This book will teach you to understand basic physical systems that will affect our everyday lives: the location, physical, and cultural characteristics of places in order to function more effectively in our world. It explains how human and physical systems have arranged and changed the surface of the Earth. It will help you to understand the relationship between the physical environment and society, provide you with insight for wise management decisions about how the planet's resources should be used and conserved.

Learning geography helps us develop an understanding of the interdependence of everything on Earth and how we connected through location, place, movement, region, history, and culture — helping us to build awareness of cultural diversity — how and why people live and act the way they do.
