Much too gentle
After 15 years of homeschooling, I wanted to have more living books as the spine of my children's curriculum, and decided (for this year) to move to a Charlotte Mason approach rather than an eclectic with a heavy classical approach. Miss Mason's approach is very classical, with a broad range of exposure through living books. I have used Susan Wise Bauer's grammar curriculum for years, but decided to try Sandi Queen's to keep lessons shorter. My children (ages 9, 11 & 12) are done with the lesson's in Queen's curriculum in 5 minutes. Even if they had not been formally exposed to grammar before, my opinion is that the lessons at every level of this program (I bought 3 different levels) are much too gentle (easy). The books are beautiful, and I appreciate that Sandi Queen includes things like picture study and poetry instruction and analyzing which are not covered in Bauer's grammar programs, but for us, this program (Language Lessons for the Secondary Child), overall, is covering concepts that my children mastered in 2nd or 3rd grade.

Looking forward to using this.
We havent begun using this yet, but Im very pleased looking through it. Very similar to Emma Serles Language Lessons, yet extends beyond elementary grades, and increases appropriately in difficulty. Im expecting it to provide my child with sufficient writing instruction for a full writing program, but in the CM style we enjoy. Looking forward to using it.

My 11 year old daughter is convinced this is the only language arts program she ever wants to use We had been using Sonlight's language arts program but she was unmotivated to do the writing exercises In addition I had her doing Easy Grammar for extra grammar practice She did not like it So I made the switch to Queen two years ago and the difference has been wonderful My daughter no longer complains about doing her "workbook" for language While similar in concept to the Sonlight program the layout and presentation is nicer and more kid-friendly The beautiful full color prints motivate the student as writing prompts Grammar is thorough enough to discard the Easy Grammar lessons my daughter disliked and the approach is more natural Best of all is the variety and length of lessons Not too much not too little but just right for each age level If you are a Charlotte Mason educator these lessons are an easy way to simplify your language arts program and you can't beat the price I couldn't be happier with this product; it was just what our family was looking for!

Why did you choose this?
Should I use volume 1 or 2 of Language Lessons for the Secondary Child for an eighth grader who has used Applications of Grammar Book 1?
I used LL v2 with my 6th grader who has somewhat of a learning disability. She struggles alot with comprehension. The lang. lessons are very short, very easy and ones she could do on her own. I basically used them as review. The many speeches, poems, and documents that were in the book, we used as practice for cursive handwriting.
I enjoy the relaxed and creative approach to language arts that Queen Homeschool provides.
Found on a trusted source.
My daughter is entering High School and is ready for a more challenging language arts book.
Having used this publisher the previous year with my student, I happily purchased the next level to continue our journey.
