Description
This course is a full ELA program and introduces students to basic reading skills, as well as reading strategies to use in short stories, a short play, poetry, and fables. Students will use graphic organizers to follow the writing process to write for a variety of genres. The spelling rules and word families reinforce language arts skills. Cursive writing is used in the penmanship portion. Each of the 10 units contains 3-5 sections to complete. Each section ends with a self-test, which is great for review and each unit ends with a cumulative unit test. The Teacher’s Guide has the answers to all the sections, self-tests, unit tests, additional learning activities and worksheets, and includes an Alternate Test for each unit and spelling list. Daily instructional material is written directly into the workbooks. This course will take an average of 45 minutes daily to complete. ~Amber

Since each self-paced unit can be completed in as little as three to four weeks, students experience a sense of accomplishment at the completion of each one! In addition, regular self tests and an end-of-unit test provide assessment of student progress. An essential teacher's guide is included to provide important teaching supplements, such as instructional notes and answer keys, as well as additional resources and activities.

Calvert Language Arts takes an umbrella approach that wraps reading/phonics, spelling, and handwriting, plus introductory grammar, and composition into a single set of Worktexts. Worktexts provide both textual material and the written response space students need. Special attention will be given to reading well-loved children’s books and non-fiction texts. Preschool has one student workbook and resource book. Kindergarten has two student workbooks with oral tests given quarterly. Starting in Grades 1-5, a full-color, consumable, set of 10 worktexts contain 3-5 sections to complete. Each of the worktexts will take 3-4 weeks to finish, giving a total of 160-180 daily lessons that will take around 45 minutes each. Grade 1 has five Student Readers and in Grade 3, cursive instruction begins. Daily instructional material is written directly into the workbooks, making your student more independent. Each section ends with a self-test and each unit ends with a cumulative unit test.
