This is the penny whistle I taught myself on 20 years ago Now I am teaching my 4 children with these While a penny whistle is a relatively easy instrument to learn- even a 6 year old has the hand strength to use it- the fingers get quite a workout while playing it This improves dexterity not just for music playing but for handwriting and other small motor activities as well! It has become very difficult to find this type of penny whistle- the brass ones with a plastic mouthpiece produce a less mellow sound This whistle has the most lovely mellow tones and so even if someone blows into it really hard to annoy mom (um not that MY kids ever do that) it is not like a shrill whistle at all it is still a soft sound A wonderful beginner instrument yet also really fun (and easy) for an advanced musician to 'toy around' with HIGHLY recommended! My only caveat is that if you step on the mouthpiece end it can bend out of shape The first couple times you'll be able to bend it back but eventually you won't In other words don't leave it on the floor!
