Description
Includes the Student Guide and Teacher Guide for America's Story Volume 1.
The Student Books are amazing. Full of colorful artwork and photos as well as black & white illustrations, vocabulary tidbits, maps, and biographical sketches, it is skillfully formatted into an appealing and engaging text. Each of the 28 chapters (i.e. weekly lessons) have text interspersed with Narration Breaks (place to stop and recount orally the information that has been covered) and questions: "Ready to Explore" (America's Story). Each chapter ends with a two-page photo montage (a feature I love) that pertains to the chapter's focus. For instance, there is a collection of Native American dwellings each with short informational captions in America's Story.

The Teacher Guide is a combination book. It is part teacher book, with some course instructional information, detailed daily lesson plans, an overview of the activities built into the student worksheets, teaching tips for struggling learners, supply lists, suggestions for special projects, and answers for student worksheets. Information for the teacher (about 10% of the book) includes a section on the importance of narration and words of encouragement from the publisher. The remainder of the book is student worksheets (which are reproducible for your own homeschooling family). These worksheets provide the heart of a student's journal to accompany the course. Very nicely designed and well-illustrated, there are daily front-and-back worksheets. These are similar but appropriately different for each age level between the two series. The whole TG is three-hole punched, and for the record, there are no tests in either series.

America's Story worksheets include Draw-Write pages (journaling lines, space for sketching, copywork), Mini-Project pages (cut & glue projects), Written Narration pages, Timeline pages (cards for each chapter with space for students to create their own timeline), a Special Prayer Book (a cut apart book for writing a weekly prayer for his/her country), and Artist Study (quick introduction to an artist with a variety of related art activities). Mapwork and vocabulary study are also a featured part of these pages.

Publisher's Description of America's Story Volume 1 Set

History comes alive in the stories and adventures of explorers and pioneers who saw in America the chance to live a dream to freely worship God, to have the chance to own land, and the search for wealth and opportunities. It is also the story of cultures that at times cooperated or clashed, as well as distant rulers and countries who saw a chance to expand their power through conflict or treaty.

Volume One in this series for your elementary students includes:

  • Beautiful historic illustrations, photographs, maps, and cultural connections
  • Examples of history you can still see today all across this great land
  • Important narratives of the people and places that stand for some of the most pivotal moments in America's development.

This vivid collection of history is as varied and vast as the lands that stretch from the original thirteen colonies to the gold fields of California. Discover the people who braved and tamed a wilderness to form communities and eventually states that dot the landscape of this great land we know today.

Category Description for Volume 1: Ancient Americans to Gold Rush

Angela O'Dell's Living History of our World series, now published by Master Book Publishers, retains its conversational, highly-readable text that draws the reader back to whatever time period or person is being covered. You live with them, walk/sail/ride with them, worship/pray with them, and make history with them. Then, in wonderful Charlotte Mason style, you retell their story in your own words, draw pictures, follow them on maps, research and discover background information, copy their words, and make note of whatever special lessons you have learned. The gorgeous Student Books are coupled with user-friendly Teacher Guides, and the result is strongly Christian, highly enjoyable and informational courses. America's Story is covered in three volumes and is directed toward 3rd through 6th graders. The World's Story is covered in another three volumes and is directed toward 6th through 8th graders.

Frankly, the Student Books are amazing. You can probably tell I'm enthusiastic about these courses. The conservative biblical perspective, the well-done and user-friendly materials, and the variety of interesting and thought-provoking activities are melded into an excellent homeschooling resource. Student Books are 300 pgs, pb. Teacher Guides are 350 pgs, pb ~ Janice

Not 'Activity' Sheets
This reads like a story, much less 'dry' than most history textbooks, we actually use it as a read aloud. As for the accompanying 'activity sheets'?
Unless you and your children are fully invested in the Charlotte Mason approach (lots of narration, drawing and writing) I would HIGHLY SUGGEST bypassing the student workbook/activity sheets. These are not activity sheets, they are basic outlines of what an activity sheet could be that requires you to rely very heavily upon your imagination and knowledge of the subject to complete. My children were bored out of their minds and begging for me to simply print out a detailed coloring page that they could do instead. While I do like the textbook itself, I will not be purchasing the 'sets' anymore, it's simply a waste of money unless your child-as I said- is wholly enthusiastic about recounting their reading text in their own words.

Disappointed
The reviews of this volume were very encouraging, however, I am very disappointed in the lack of detail and depth.

Great curriculum
Easy to use. I did feel the need to expand on many things but my son is in 6th grade.

Well written open & go history curriculum for many ages.
We are 1/2 way into Americas Story 1 amd are really enjoying it. The worksheets were not a good fit for us, so we have stopped using those. There were parts that my kiddos enjoyed, we have opted to add in other read alouds & hands on projects instead as we want to (supplementing is definitely not necessary, but we love read alouds & simple craft projects from time to time.). I really like that this is a true open & go history curriculum, it is well written, & appeals to a wide age range (we are using it for K, 4th, 7th & 11th...my 11th grader is using the authors suggested supplements to make it high school worthy).

Serious and transparent, but still fun and relatable! We have enjoyed drawing parallels in our own lives and figuring out how we can learn to make choices based off of the past.
I have my third grader do most of the the bookwork, and my first grader does select pages. It is a little old for the first grader but we are making it work!

The teachers guide is actually the workbook, so if you want each child to do the workbook, you will want to purchase a teacher's guide for each child.

Great History Curriculum
I love America's Story! This history curriculum is written so that a child can understand. It is written like a story. The illustrations in this book are wonderful. Each chapter is broken down into sections with a narration break at the end of each.
The teacher guide has the suggested schedule and all the worksheets you need. Every week is pretty much the same with a sketching activity and questions.

Lower level teaching

Can you purchase just the teacher's edition for a read aloud or do you have to have the student copy?

If you want to use this course as a read-aloud, then you will need the Student Book rather than the Teacher Edition. The Student Book includes the history textual content. The Teacher Edition include reproducible worksheets, tests, answer keys, lesson plans, etc.

Does this text require any other books?

If you’re buying the set of two books that’s all you need; One text and one teacher’s guide to make copies from. It might be nice to read a related biography or historical fiction book sometimes, but it’s not required.
