This beautifully written and illustrated Smithsonian book series is sure to appeal to a wide range of readers and history buffs. Each multipurpose chapter book contains facts, events, and notable people and more from each of the original 13 colonies. Chapters cover a specific topic and many include a biography of a significant person of interest, sprinkled with geographical tidbits, bite sized facts, thinking points, historical maps, source documents and vocabulary words in callout boxes. In the back of each book is featured a timeline, glossary, web links to additional activities, recommendations for additional reading, and a few Common Core suggestions for critical thinking. These could be of valuable use in a unit or state study. Although from a secular publisher, the role of religion is sometimes discussed in its historical context.
