Dark Frigate
This Dover reprint edition of the 1924 Newberry award winner propels us into the seafaring age of the 1600’s, where the story’s hero, Philip Marsham, driven from London, becomes a sailor, and then, is forced to become a pirate. Will he ever be free of his haunting past—or from his captors?
Each chapter starts with a small, pen-and-ink style drawing, but the emphasis is the story built in your mind. Be prepared for the unique vocabulary, cadence, and vocabulary of 17th century (ala King James style) and of sailors, and some characters who might be described as “banging, basting, broiling broggers!” Therefore, although the publishers invite readers in Grade 3, consider your younger child’s reading ability. This book, however, does make a nice read aloud. As a landlubber, I needed a nautical terms dictionary on standby. 229 pgs, pb. ~ Ruth
Upon meeting some sailors bound for the port of Bideford, Philip joins them in signing on with the Rose of Devon, a frigate bound for Newfoundland. Their transatlantic passage is disrupted by an encounter with a floating wreck, and their rescue of the survivors is repaid with foul treachery by these "gentlemen of fortune" — a band of bloodthirsty pirates who coerce Philip and the rest of the crew into joining in their murderous deeds. Will Philip hang alongside them when the buccaneers are brought to justice?
