Have you found yourself wishing that the information found in Story of the World was available for an older student, or maybe for yourself? Well, now it is! Corresponding to the time period covered by SOTW, Vol. 1 and written by Susan Wise Bauer in her highly readable style, this is a "grown-up" version suitable for older students and parents. Accompanying the text are maps and timelines, even a few photos. This book just begs to be read. I started reading the section on Spartacus and soon found myself enthralled with the details of the Gladiator Wars. ~ Janice
Publisher's Description of History of the Ancient World
Bring history to life with this compelling narrative approach! From the creation of the first empires to the fall of Rome, learn about the events and people of ancient times. Ideal as the spine for advanced high school history studies, this book also makes compelling reading for adults interested in the grand sweep of history.
This is more of a college-level textbook. I love Susan Wise Bauer's Story of the World curriculum and have used it for years with my elementary and middle school kids. I would not recommend this text, The History of the Ancient World, even for high school unless your student is an excellent reader, as well as being VERY interested in history. The way I'm utilizing it this year is I will use the Story of the World Volume 1: Ancient Times for all my kids (ages 6 through 14) and the oldest two students (8th and 9th grade) will use The History of the Ancient World (this text) as a supplement to dive deeper into a particular area of interest here and there. This will ease them into a more scholarly workload, without overburdening them. I purchased the accompanying Study & Teaching Guide, which has excellent comprehension and critical thinking questions. The guide could be used for writing assignments, but again, I will be very choosy and only use small selections for now. If my kids show great interest in history, I might consider using this in upper high school (11th or 12th grade) as their main text. This is a hefty book. It has 85 chapters and is close to 900 pages. I majored in history and I will personally enjoy reading this myself this year.

Great continuation from Story of the World
I just started "Story of the World" with my daughters in K and 3rd grade and we love it. I needed a version for my 8th grader, so I bought this. From reading from the beginning, and skimming the rest, I think this will be great. It definitely has a more advanced level of writing than "Story of the World", but it feels similar in that it reads like a story being told, rather than a boring textbook. I like that it incorporates stories from the time period that help the reader understand the culture. I would say this will work well for advanced middle school students to high school and adults. (I'm looking forward to reading it myself.) The accompanying study guide I bought to go with it has good comprehension and critical thinking questions/essay prompts, too.
