Literary Passages: Close Reading Grade 1
The higher standards expected today call for literacy instruction that focuses on the close reading of complex texts. In this book, twenty literary text passages are organized around high-interest topics connected to the curriculum and to key comprehension skills. Each reading is specially formatted to provide practice with text marking - a proven, powerful tool for building comprehension skills, such as describing characters, settings, key events and details, and story structure; identifying points of view; determining the meaning of key vocabulary and figurative language; and making inferences.
Subtitled 20 Reading Selections with Text-Marking Exercises, this Scholastic series helps students practice reading comprehension skills. Students will read one of 20, one-page texts (identified with Lexile scores) focusing on one of several literary modes: character; point of view; setting/mood; key events and details; sequence of events; problem and solution; context clues; comparison and contrast; inferences and summaries. First, students employ active reading by marking the text. Then, they answer comprehension questions: two multiple-choice that require an explanation followed by two open-ended questions. Reproducible Comprehension Skills Summary cards are included for student use. Sample text markings and sample answers are provided in reduced size in the back of each level. 65 pgs, pb. ~ Ruth
