R.E.A.L. Science - Life (Level 1)
RSO Life (level one) is appropriate for 1st to 4th grade. The course is divided into three sections: the human body, the animal kingdom, and the plant kingdom. Students study the major body systems through making models and doing tests on their own bodies. Classification and the five kingdoms of living things are studied as students make an animal kingdom book.
Animal kingdom labs include examining real worms, mollusks, arthropods, and butterfly metamorphosis. Students learn about the plant kingdom through looking at the makeup and function of seeds, flowers, leaves, stems, and roots.
The following is a list of topics your child will learn during the year while completing Life (level one). Each topic and/or subtopic will include 1 to 3 lessons complete with lesson story, labs, reading, and other activities. Each topic will take anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks to complete. Remember your child will also be having a whole lot of fun. Also included in this scope are laughing, playing, digging, exploring, reading, singing, and begging for more RSO!

I used R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey Life Science Level 1 when my kids were in 1st and 3rd grades. The lessons and activities were basic and fun. It was our first year homeschooling, and I'd bought a different science curriculum first but sent it back after looking through it. We are now on our third book in the R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey series.
No, everything in the book is black & white.
No you’re better off not getting the workbook and just getting this book. Thebworkbook pages are inside. You just have to copy them. The workbook is just convenient if you do not want to copy them from the main book.
The teachers notes and the textbook are all in one. It is very laid out with planning guides, supply lists, lessons that you can read to your student or (if your student is a reader) can read to themselves. There are step by step on the labs for you to read and pages for the student to fill out. Our family really loves this curriculum and hopes that they will add more level 2 books.
Yes, the student pages (#039412) - http://www.rainbowresource.com/proddtl.php?id=039412&subject=Science/11&category=Life+Science+%28Gr.+1-4%29/6865 - are a printed copy of what is available (and reproducible) from the curriculum - #039411.
No a microscope is not needed that I recall. You will need a hand lens (magnifying glass) for some of the lessons.
Curriculum for my second grader
I wanted a secular science curriculum.
This was recommended to us as a good secular science curriculum.
Heard great things about it.
