Description

Your student will be immediately pulled into the story of a pirate Captain, who happens to be a clever storyteller and teacher. It's an independent course written completely to your writer. The introduction is entirely in pirate speak (with a translation for parents in the back if needed) but the writing exercises are solid and easy to follow. It is not a grammar program where you learn nouns and clauses. The book is consumable, and the exercises are designed to help your writer organize and draw out their ideas. Each lesson includes loads of examples in the voice of the pirate Captain, though most of the book is in plain English. The depth of the exercises is unique. In addition to the expected topics of brainstorming, choosing characters and growing a plot, this guide works on more. Not reproducible. 321 pgs, pb. ~Sara

  • Guided creative writing for a confident or a reluctant writer

Publisher's Description of Pirate's Guide t' th' Grammar of Story
Introducing A NEW Creative Writing Curriculum

The homeschooling community has a big need for an independently used creative writing curriculum. A Pirate's Guide t' th' Grammar of Story, written by a professional story designer, is a practical and engaging resource written for Junior High and High School students.

Many students are eager to tell stories, but lack instruction. Many parents don't teach creative writing because they don't know where to begin. This consumable workbook was designed to be easy to use and does not require anything of the parent except to simply encourage their children's creativity.

Workbook author Chris Hansen has over a decade of story designing experience, training filmmakers and novelists. He took the material he uses with professionals and simplified it for students. But, as someone who works with creative people, he could not produce something dry and boring. So he crafted a story of pirates, talking monkeys, and magical jelly beans which is layered into the exercises in order to keep students engaged and provide an interactive model of the lessons.

The material has been well tested, not only by professionals, but by homeschoolers themselves. The curriculum was taught and revised repeatedly over two years in homeschool co-op classes and individual homes. The final version was published in the spring of 2016.

The response we've had from the kids who have worked through it has been enthusiastic. We knew we had a treasure when students didn't want English class to end!

WThis worked well for my son. he initially didn't want to do it, but was won over and finished the book happily.

Pirates Guide is a creative writing curriculum that uses the story of a pirates to help students develop their own creative writing talents.

My son said: It’s well designed
I like the way they teach the stuff in it.

Even Reluctant Writers Enjoy This Book
When school is over, some parents fear their children’s learning will wash up on a deserted island surrounded by a sea of forgetfulness. So, what can we do?
To avoid a revolution, I strategized a unique and fun compromise with my twelve-year-old reluctant writer. A Pirate’s Guide t’ th’ Grammar of Story, may be the answer for your student as well. In a coconut shell, it teaches the basic elements of story.
The Pirate’s Guide is an all-in-one creative writing curriculum for students eight years old and up.
If your child is eleven or older, he will be able to work independently through this interactive, consumable book. But think how entertaining it would be if you donned an eye patch and read aloud Captain LeFossa’s words before your child began the day’s assignment.
Woven among the instructional and activity sections is an ongoing, entertaining story about Captain LeFossa, his talking monkeys, and their quest for an unusual treasure.
This fun and adventurous tale features your student as the main character of the story, which pulls him right into the action.
Each brief “chapter” of the story incorporates a skill or concept introduced in the instruction and activity sections that follow.
While The Pirate’s Guide is witty, it is not void of valuable weight.
“This is a serious curriculum that teaches the fundamental building blocks—the grammar—of a story.”
I would not say my reluctant writer has become an enthusiastic writer just yet. However, because of the lessons’ bite-size portions and their excellent presentations, The Pirate’s Guide has produced a more attentive student at my house. His understanding of what makes a great story as well as his writing skills are progressing.
I asked him what he liked most about the workbook. He said, “I like the pirate story. It’s fun. I like that I don’t have to do a lot of writing all at once. I get to make lists and answer questions about writing.”
This is true. The student will learn about various writing concepts over a span of several lessons before actually putting them into practice by writing a story.
One of the most important things I’ve witnessed is my son developing a can-do attitude toward writing.
And that, my friend, is a summer not wasted.

A Unique Creative Writing Curriculum
I have an 11 year old boy who would rather be outside creating his own adventures rather than learning grammar or creative writing inside. I felt that this would be something to grab his imagination while he is learning. A Pirate’s Guide t’ th’ Grammar Story is an ingenious way of grabbing the imagination of those of us who dream of being pirates on the high seas but find ourselves having to live out life as landlubbers. This is a unique creative writing curriculum.

The story starts out setting the stage you are going to read the story all in pirate talk. It goes back in forth with Captain Yogger talking in pirate talk and you the student in proper English. For us parents who may need a bit of help deciphering the language there is an introduction in the back of the book in clear proper English.

The story builds on its self introducing concepts that are needed to write a creative story. The variety of exercises includes is mind-storming in which they give you a list of ideas of topics. You will be given a few suggestions in the beginning. They break up mind-storming in several list for you to work on. The mind-storming exercises will help you prepare to be creative with your writing with topics like the setting, sounds, colors, characterizations, emotions, smells, vocal characterizations, and much more creative mind-storming.

At the beginning of each chapter you will hear from Captain Yogger which will set the stage for the lesson. There are several exercises and they vary in length.

There are reviews in some chapters which are called, “Scratch Yer Noggin” This will focus on new concepts to reinforce what was taught in the chapter.

After the exercises is a section called “Raise the Anchor and Set Sail,” which is where all those mind-storming exercises come into play for you to write your own pirate story.

It’s also a very comprehensive curriculum that is building up skills one step at a time while it adds more skills to itself in each chapter.

You are not learning grammar rules. You are learning writing sentence structure which uses grammar to put that sentence together. You are coming up with verbs, nouns, adjectives, and other grammar concepts in a non-traditional way. It’s almost like learning without knowing you are learning those concepts while putting words, sentences, paragraphs, and finally creating your own story together.

This doesn’t have a teacher’s manual or answer key. Just an introduction as there isn’t any right or wrong answers. If you want skydiving pink porcupine that dances and sings and smells like bananas as a main character- you can. Your student gets to think outside of the traditional box creative writing curriculum.

This is an extremely engaging and unique curriculum. It’s easy to understand for both the student and the teacher.
