Description

Winter is snowflakes in a small box card game for two players that packs strategic competition and takes only 15 minutes to play.  Does that sound like a cozy winter’s activity?  Bring on the hot chocolate and get ready to engage in a unique head-to-head battle for the most snowflakes left standing - - or not yet melted.  This is a quick game for two players in which they take turns placing cards depicting four snowflakes with two shades of blue on each card.  Players first choose which snowflake color they are - - light blue or dark blue and take their nine matching snowflake tokens.  Place the first card down to start and winter has begun!  There are two phases to this game:

In phase one, players take turns placing snowflake cards strategically so that they have groups of four of their color in a square formation.  The goal is to place as many of their matching snowflake tokens on these formations.  Once the deck of cards runs out or any player has used all their tokens, the game moves to phase two.

Time to thaw!!! It might look like one player is in a prime position to win before the thaw but watch out - - anything can happen now.  Players take turns performing one of three actions.  1.  Move a card that has no tokens placed on it to another location that will form a square of your color and place a token, 2.  Remove a card from the game that has no token and cannot be moved to form a square of your color or, 3. Remove one of your snowflake tokens.  Play continues until one player has no remaining snowflake tokens on any card.  The player left with at least one token in play wins the game!  This card game is quick to set up, learn and play but you will enjoy playing it repeatedly as you try to master the best Winter Game strategy!
Publisher's Description of Winter Game

Every winter, the lake freezes over. It won’t last long, so we have to play as soon as possible, trying to dominate the frozen parts of the lake before everything unfreezes and we lose everything. In order to win, choose key spaces wisely before your rival does, and control them. Show that the cold never bothered you.

In Winter, two players compete to be the player with the most chips of their color on the lake at the end of the game. The game is divided into two phases. In the first, the freezing phase, players will create the frozen lake in a contiguous form using their snowflake cards. They’ll also attempt to secure zones in which they’ve managed to group four snowflakes of their color using chips. In the second phase, the unfreezing, they’ll undo the creation by moving and retrieving their cards and chips of their color. At the end of the game, the player with the most chips on the table is declared the winner.

Winter is an abstract game for 2 players ages 8 and up. Games last 10 minutes in which good decisions are everything. This is a reissue of the 2016 edition with all new mechanics.

Winter was the winner of the 2021 Cardboard Edison Award. It’s the first of a series of the 4 Seasons series that will continue later with Autumn, Summer, and Spring.
