Mosaic: A Story of Civilization Game
Mosaic is an epic civilization building, action selection game with a mid-range complexity. It may become one of your favorites if you like a big variety of choices during each turn that also gives you plenty of time to accomplish several goals before it ends. There are several different ways to slowly build towards effective game-end points that can lead to victory and there is more than one good strategy that can be employed to firm up a win!
Overview: Each player starts with a unique leader card that gives them different abilities or advantages, and their starting resources. In this game, food is produced to increase your population, stone is used to build cities and wonders, and ideas help to play technology cards which provide actions, resources and some of the nine pillars of civilization needed to build other technology cards and complete projects.
The universal currency is money which is used to equip military forces and at a two to one ratio, players can use it in place of stone, ideas or food resources. The main board has a hex grid and is divided into seven regions. The regions are where players will vie for control by building cities, towns, wonders and locating military forces to score some of the important points in the game. It also has spaces for the four decks of cards (Build, Technology, Population, and Tax & Tariff) that propel the game.
Mosaic takes place over rounds that are divided by Empire Scoring at which time players can start accumulating game points based on their domination of regions on the main board. Players can take any one of eight possible actions during their turns. They are:
- Work: Produce Stone, Food, or Ideas
- Population: Increase population
- Build: Place a city or town on the board or build a project
- Wonder: Construct a wonder in a region where you have a city.
- Technology: Claim a technology card
- Tax & Tariff: Tax the population or merchants you have and collect money.
- Military: Recruit military units and place in a region to build influence.
- Government: Create a government
Clearly, this game gives involved, strategic game play with several actions and strategies that players can employ towards the goal of earning the most points both during end of round and game-end scoring to win the game. Mosaic accommodates 2-6 players and needs at least two hours to complete. I have enjoyed my time with this game so far and cannot wait to play with a larger group. ~ Marsha
Mosaic is an action selection game. On your turn, you will perform one of seven actions and acquire components.
Acquiring Components is important in creating the unique mosaic of your civilization. They are used as prerequisites for many new technologies, as well as for scoring. Also, by pursuing specialization in one or more Civilization Components, you may be able to claim a ‘Golden Age’ of that type.
As the game goes on and your Civilization grows, scoring cards are eventually revealed from the four decks. Each time a scoring card is revealed, your Civilization will score for each region that you dominate with your cities and military units. After the third scoring card is revealed, there is one final turn and the game ends. You will then score for your cities and towns, your wonders, projects, and golden ages, and for all of your cards that score for your unique Civilization Components.
