Building on the skills taught in workbook 1, a quick review of letters and connecting these letters are provided in fun exercises with Mr. Meerkat. Lessons take between 10-15 minutes. The workbook is spiral-bound along the top, so your wrists are not resting on the coil. The focus of this level is working on automatization in writing letters from memory and fluency. From the letter review, practice flows into sentences copywork and letter sizing. Starting lessons will have students working at a 42-point font and working them down to an 18-point font. Letter spacing and word spacing is addressed. Tests and self-evaluations are scattered throughout. A secular option for this level, as famous American quotes are used as copywork samples in this workbook. Everything you need to help instruct your students in cursive is found in this book. New American Cursive is an easy-to-follow resource for teaching beginning cursive. It presents simplified letter forms, using multi-sensory methods to aid in the learning of motor skills necessary to write well. Developed by Iris Hatfield, with over 35 years of experience in the handwriting field, the book improves the process of teaching handwriting and allows students to start at a younger age.
New American Cursive 2:
Handwriting with a bit of a different approach will teach your child cursive skills beginning in first grade. There are fewer strokes, a natural right slant, and the strokes are simplified. The philosophy is that students have the motor skills to write cursive at the first grade level, and when we wait to teach them at about third grade, they literally go back to the speed of first grade writing as they transition from print to cursive.
Each book includes a 7-page teaching guide, followed by instruction and exercises, illustrations and practice sheets with quotes and Bible verses (a secular version of Book II uses quotes from famous Americans in lieu of Bible verses). Book II and III also include handwriting evaluations, review of paper placement and pencil position, review of letter and number formations, and progress reports and test pages. The books have an uncluttered, visual appeal with uncramped space to practice. Since the books are intended for elementary grades, the spacing is very important.
