Description

Nothing says summer like sailing ships! Turn up the heat with pirates and plunder, while playing Skull King with your group of shipmates! This trick-taking card game packs great fun for 2-8 players in a small, portable box. For variety, there are two different levels of play and scoring for beginning and advanced variations. Pirate cards add different trick taking actions and optional cards such as the Kraken, White Whale and Loot cards bring additional excitement and challenges.

Skull King plays over ten rounds. In the first round, each player receives one card. In round two, everyone receives two cards, etc., until ten rounds are complete. Each player tries to predict how many tricks he or she will be able to take each round. Once everyone places a bid in turn order, the first player starts by revealing the starting card for the round. There are three standard suits of cards (green, yellow and purple) and a suit of Jolly Roger (black) cards numbered 1 through 14, which is the trump suit.

The first card played determines the suit each player must play that round with the highest number taking the trick. If a player does not have a card to play in the matching suit, they may play any card. Generally, if a card is played that does not match the starting suit; it automatically loses that trick. The following cards change these rules:

  1. Black cards are trump and beat any standard suit card – even those of a greater number value.
  2. Pirates beat all numbered cards.
  3. Escape cards are the lowest value in the deck and allow players to avoid winning a trick if desired.
  4. Tigress cards are played as either a Pirate or Escape card at the player’s discretion.
  5. The Skull King beats all numbered cards and pirates. Only Mermaids can beat him.
  6. Mermaids beat all numbered cards, but lose to all pirates except the Skull King.

At the end of each round, total up scores with points for guessing the correct number of tricks taken and points subtracted for guessing incorrectly. At the end of round ten, add all scores and the player with the most points wins the game!

There are special instructions for two-player games but I recommend a group of three or more for the optimum pirate experience. There are helpful web resources for this game with links furnished in the game manual. Plays in 30-45 minutes. ~ Marsha
