Introductory Physics, 3rd Edition
- Academically rigorous course that uses a mastery approach of teaching fewer topics with more depth
- Students are taught to see God in creation, while learning current scientific theories and an old earth timeline
- Core Text used in the Novare Introductory Physics Program
- Requires Algebra 1 concurrently or successful completion of Algebra 1
Novare’s Introductory Physics is a rigorous, academic option for any high school student who is currently studying or has completed Algebra 1. Covering fewer topics with more depth, the course provides a mastery approach to Physics and integrates science with math, science history, and English language use. The Novare Introductory Physics Textbook is well-written, with interesting illustrations and photographs. The Text begins with an introduction to the teacher, which is followed with a section written to the student. Chapters begin with clearly stated objectives, key vocabulary, and include textual information divided into smaller digestible pieces, examples and illustrations, and wraps up with a chapter exercise. Answers to computational questions are included with each exercise. The back of the text includes a glossary, reference data, chapter equations and objectives list, experiments with guidelines for keeping a journal, scientists to know, and accurate measurements. Topically students learn the nature of scientific knowledge, motion, Newton's Laws of Motion, energy, momentum, atoms/matter/substances, heat and temperature, pressure and buoyancy, waves/sound/light, introduction to electricity, DC circuits, fields and magnetism, and geometric optics. An overview of the lab experiments is found at the back of the Textbook, but complete teacher instruction is found in the Experiments for Introductory Physics and ASPC, which is a required component for full lab credit on a transcript. The Student Lab Report Handbook is a suggested supplement. This is a very good course that promotes thinking skills in the realm of physics and prepares students for the rest of their high school science and college level sciences.
Introductory Physics is ideal for the "physics first" high school science program, which places a physics-based course in the freshman year. We believe physics logically belongs at the start of the high school science sequence because it includes so many foundational skills and concepts that chemistry and biology studies can build upon later.
We understand, however, that many will need to place physics in 10th or 11th grade, so this book is adaptable for that purpose. Two optional chapters ("Pressure and Buoyancy" and "Geometric Optics") have been included with more challenging math content for those older students.
Students should be enrolled in concurrent algebra I to use this book, which is standard track mathematics for 9th grade. We make our exercises challenging, requiring students to utilize multiple concepts and skills to arrive at an answer, but nothing higher than basic algebra is required for this text. This book does not use trigonometry; for our advanced physics text, please see our other book, Physics: Modeling Nature.
All Novare textbooks uphold the Mastery-Learning paradigm, designed to break the Cram-Pass-Forget Cycle and promote long-term retention of course content. This paradigm appears in several essential methods, but the centerpiece is a weekly quiz assessment in which quizzes are fully cumulative (there are no chapter exams at this level). With cumulative quizzes determining a sizable portion of the grade, students must develop a new approach to their personal management of this class that includes regular review—we recommend about one-third of their time devoted to reviewing old quizzes and homework, and two-thirds for new material. The Digital Resources for Introductory Physics provide students with a sample study regimen in the Weekly Review Guides, with advice on how best to study each week. Chapter exercises are only calculations or full-sentence answers, never multiple choice or matching.
As with all NSM texts, Introductory Physics is written from the perspective of the historic Christian faith. Read about how we bring this about on our Textbook Philosophy page—it's different from other Christian publishers.
We place a lot of content dealing with the history of science in the body of the text, not in a sidebar where it can be ignored. Knowledge of this history of science is essential to understanding how science works. There is even a little philosophy exploring the nature of scientific knowledge—something you won't find elsewhere. Technical communication, both written and verbal, is emphasized.
If that wasn't enough, we take pride in producing physical books of top quality. Beautiful, relevant color graphics appear throughout as well as prose that is accurate, lucid and concise. Our beautiful hardbacks are sturdy and enduring. We use library quality, "smyth-sewn" binding so pages never fall out and the spine never cracks. And we prefer a page layout approach that is aesthetically sensitive, pleasing, and engaging.
Finally, the assigned experiments for this book focus on giving the student a genuine experience of a lab scientist, emphasizing proper procedures, safety consideration, materials disposal, lab journaling, lab report writing, precision vs. accuracy, handling apparatus, and accounting for unexpected results. Student instructions for 5 laboratory experiments are included in the appendix. Teacher's instructions are included in the supplemental book Experiments for Introductory Physics and Accelerated Studies in Physics and Chemistry.
Novare Science emphasizes that science education needs to be renewed using research, scientific evidence, and forward-thinking strategies while keeping God at the helm. Students are taught to see God in creation, while learning current scientific theories including the evolutionary theory. Using a mastery approach, students learn fewer topics in more depth than typical courses while reviewing previously learned key concepts. Self-created lab journals and reports are suggested to prepare students for high school and college sciences. Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth Science are taught at the middle school level. At the high school level, Novare takes a Physics first approach to science and offers two pathways for students: Grade-Level Pathway and the Accelerated Pathway. Parents and teachers are encouraged to read From Wonder to Mastery by John Mays to learn about the program philosophy.
Novare Science offers two High School Pathways that link a student’s math placement and science courses. The Grade-Level Pathway follows a standard sequence of math courses (Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Statistics), with a student taking Algebra 2 and Chemistry concurrently. With this sequence in mind, the Grade-Level Pathway for Novare Science is Introductory Physics, General Biology, and General Chemistry. Currently, there is no course from Novare Science for Grade 12 in the Grade-Level Pathway. It is recommended students complete an Anatomy and Physiology or Environmental Science course. The publisher plans to release Novare Environmental Science in 2025. The Student Lab Handbook is recommended for all courses.
Taking a Physics first approach to high school science, Novare’s Introductory Physics is for any student who is currently studying or has completed Algebra 1. The course may be taken at any point in the high school years, as it includes two chapters that provide an optional challenge for older learners (and may be omitted for ninth graders). Covering fewer topics with more depth, the course provides a mastery approach to Physics and integrates science with math, science history, and English language use. Novare Science is written from a Biblical worldview to help students see God in the world, while teaching current scientific theories and a modern secular geological timeline. Required components include the Student Text, and Digital Resources. Optional, beneficial resources include the Complete Solutions, Student Lab Report Handbook, Experiments for Introductory Physics and ASPC, and Introductory Physics Lab Kit are available. The Novare Introductory Physics Program includes the Textbook, Digital Resources, Complete Solutions, and Experiments for Introductory Physics and ASPC. Please note, the Textbook is the third edition, and the suggested resources are the second edition. Editions are fully compatible.
