Just what exactly is social studies, you may ask? Well, it includes the study of all kinds of people and places, some far away and some next door. In this book we talk about families, like your family in your house, and also lots of people close by, which we call a town or city, and finally about even more people in cities or outside of cities, all living in big places called countries.

My Story and the World Around Me is a course for lower elementary students. It includes basic introductions to history, politics, sociology, economics, and geography, and provides a fuller understanding of Gods world and the cultures of the countries.

This is a daily adventure-based curriculum series that encourages families to explore the world together through four nine-week quests and to understand it better from Gods perspective. It is designed with elements that make weekly learning fun and interactive, including:

Social Studies CAN be fun!
We are loving My Story 1!!! It is open and go, which makes it super easy to use. Each lesson you 'travel' to a different location and utilize a different mode of transportation to get there. There are different foreign language words introduced here and there, which my kids really think is super neat. The vocabulary words are highlighted in the text in context which makes it easier for my kids as far as comprehension is concerned. The curriculum is broken up into four quests, and each quest has a Quest Collector Card where you can keep track of the various clues. Sprinkled throughout are various 'Talk Times.' Which are really great conversation starters, and I have had some fantastic conversations with my kiddos as a result of the great questions. There is coloring, copywork, word finds, puzzles, quizzes, worksheets, activities, picture time, vocabulary, and review built in...it really is truly comprehensive. There is a story journal at the end of each lesson where the child can write their own story over the course of the year. Every lesson weaves messages of God's love throughout, as well. There are sections throughout that mention 'Helping Hands' and feature various folks in the community who help make life run smoothly, keep us safe, etc. My kids are really having fun with this curriculum and are learning so much. Once we are done, we are definitely going to pick up My Story 2 for next year!

Meaningful History
My Story and the World Around Me 1 is a large text/workbook/teacher’s guide all-in-one single year course geared towards grades 1-2. Take your child through social studies, starting with his/her family and expand through community, city, and country into other countries/continents around the globe. I appreciate that Mr. Froman and Mr. Froman have incorporated language (Spanish & French words), interactive dialogue/questions, vocabulary, and the element of an adventurous quest into 36 weeks of geography and history lessons. It’s a difficult task to design a meaningful course that can seamlessly switch between current events/geography and Biblically accurate historical events that help children understand why history has a direct impact on today’s world. Where did everyone come from? Why are there different languages around the world?

Designed to be a half hour lesson daily, there is flexibility to work within a routine that best works for your schedule. For us, I’d likely combine 2 lessons to work through three days per school week. My Story and the World Around Me 1 includes eye catching photography, puzzles, copywork, maps, journal questions, reviews, quizzes, and hands on activities.

Great way to learn about the world around us
This is a fantastic social studies course for lower elementary students. Its set up for your to go on “quests” starting with home and community, then state and country, then branching to other countries around the world. It explores the people, homes, landmarks, geography, animals, foods and languages around the world.

It has beautiful and engagining photos. Many of which include children of the region that is being studied. Throughout the course, there are highlighted vocabulary words that you can make into flashcards. There are a variety of other activities such as word searches, coloring, storytelling and a “My Story” journal as well as the Charlotte Mason type of activities like copywork and narration. I love that at the beginning of each quest, the country being visited is mapped out on a world map labeled by day. I love maps so it's always nice to see. And always with Master Books, its from a biblical worldview.

We are starting Kindergarten and although this is for grade 1, we have already did most of what is in the Kindergarten book. So we are going to try this one out which my 5yo is very excited about!

Do you feel like this is plenty of history for a first grader?

I wouldn't consider it history. It is really more of a social studies curriculum--exploring the world and world cultures. But, for a first grader I think it is completely appropriate to teach social studies and not an in depth history. It is a very gentle easy curriculum. For some first graders it would be plenty, but you could easily add in other books to read and activities to flesh it out if your child needed more. It would be very easy to print out a world map and have your child color the countries that are talked about through the book.

Is this something I could do along with Story of America 1 with a 2nd grader or would that be too intense?

I haven't used Story of America, but My Story is not at all intensive. I think you could easily use it along with any other curriculum without overwhelming a 2nd grader. It is really too easy for my 3rd grader, but she enjoys it and it is something that she can do completely without me so we use it for those times I can't sit down with her right away.
