Dennis Englin's Chemistry is a thorough, practical, engaging lab-based curriculum that focuses on chemistry concepts and their applications. Even better, everything is strongly rooted in a biblical worldview. Written by a professional scientist and science educator, Chemistry effectively guides students through lessons and labs that are specifically designed for homeschool use. This curriculum is in-depth enough to prepare future STEM majors for college but accessible for any student needing high school chemistry.

This chemistry course was specifically written for homeschool use, easy to implement and Christian worldview based. Master Books saw a need and Dr. Dennis Englin put into print a course he had been teaching to homeschool students for many years. The course covers foundational Chemistry concepts and applications, all while keeping God and Bible in the equation. Algebra 1 is a prerequisite to this course which fulfills one high school credit.
The Student text is divided into 28 chapters covering metric measurements, chemical solutions, molecular mass and atomic theory, preparing molar solutions, chemical reactions, equations, moles, grams of reactant and product, electron configurations, the Periodic Table, ionic and covalent bonds, metal atoms, batteries, acids and bases, buffers, chemistry of carbon, organic chemistry, biochemistry, rates of chemical reactions, and environmental chemistry. The end of each chapter includes one lab. Chapters are easy to follow with an abundance of graphics and illustrations, sure to appeal to more visual students. Each chapter lists objectives and vocabulary, and notes and definitions are found in colored boxes throughout. Labs are broken down into steps with a list of required materials, purpose, and procedure. The procedure for each lab is broken down into numbered steps, some special equipment is required. Supplies used in the labs are alcohol burner, barium hydroxide, burette, burette clamp, ring stand, copper metal strip, economy pocket scale, Erlenmeyer flask, eyedropper, filter paper, glass beakers, stirring rod, graduated cylinder, laboratory scoop, Lugol's solution, Mohr pipette and pipette pump, molecular model kit, multimeter, petri dishes, pH paper, sodium acetate, soil testing kit, spectroscope analysis kit, test tube kit, transfer pipette, weighing boats (aluminum), wire with alligator clips, zinc metal strip. This Chemistry course can be done more independently; the parent acts as a guide to come alongside. Overall, this is a good, solid high school introductory Chemistry and prepares students for college level sciences. Students will learn the basics of Chemistry and how to write lab reports while carrying out the procedures. Dr. Englin makes chemistry understandable and doable in the homeschool setting. ~ Donna

The student text is well laid out with a balance of text and colorful graphics. Each chapter lists the objectives for the lesson that are to be learned, along with new vocabulary.
If you follow the suggested schedule in the teacher guide, the reading is typically done on day 1 with the worksheet to be completed, a review on day 2 focuses on vocabulary, a quiz on day 3, followed by the lab done over days 4-5. It is very manageable for the student.
The teacher guide for this Chemistry course is a must. It contains a suggested daily schedule to complete the course in a year, a grading sheet for the year, and teacher instructions for the course. It also includes all of the worksheets and laboratory reports to go along with the student text as well as all quizzes and exams to be taken.
I appreciate the variety in the worksheets - some are matching, short answer, with the majority of the work done during the lab portion. The teacher guide lays everything out for you to easily guide your student through this course.
Most important of all though, the emphasis is placed in this study of Chemistry on God's unchanging character and His absolute control of His creation.
I really like that this course shows plenty of visual examples for the labs and in explanation of different topics. It is easy to follow and great for a visual learner. The author does a great job explaining the topics and the labs. The Teacher Guide gives two samples of the lab notes, so students can see what is expected of them. It also works wonderfully for a teacher to see how to correct the labs and what to look for in the student's notes.
I would highly recommend to use this set with the corresponding Masterbooks Academy course. It makes it more fun and enhances the understanding of the material.
It was reviewed as being friendly to non-STEM oriented students, but still sufficient for college prep with a lab.

Review for class.
Will be teaching my high schooler chemistry next year and like that this comes with lots of labs and examples for lab write-ups.
