Boy Scouts Handbook: 1911
The Boy Scouts Handbook has been read by generations of Boy Scouts (and their leaders). This 1911 edition is the one that started it alland you will be surprised to see how little has changed about Scouting and its principles in the past 100 years. The traditional scouting themes of honoring God, being a good citizen, and learning important safety and survival skills are all covered in this book. What makes this vintage handbook particularly compelling, however, is that it's literally a slice of early twentieth century Americana! The guide contains over 200 period illustrations, diagrams, and black and white photographs, plus advertisements for Boy Scout products. Some of the topics covered include the Scout Oath, badges, knots, camping, canoeing, trailing, signaling, chivalry, first aid, games, and patriotism. While much of the content has stood the test of time (ie. knots, Morse Code), some of the medical information is outdated (but nevertheless interesting). An appendix contains illustrations and descriptions_1 of Boy Scout uniforms and equipment. 400 pgs, pb. ~ Lisa
