Patriot's History of the United States 15th Anniversary Edition
Although this book was written by a couple of university history professors, it is a refreshing change from the beat-up-on-America crowd. No anti-white-male, anti-Christian, anti-firearm, anti-capitalism stuff here. Instead, the authors speak of a nation to be proud of, a nation that loves public virtue, personal liberty, and private property.
This 15th anniversary edition is the size of a textbook packed with 981 pages, including footnotes and an alphabetical index. However, the text is very readable and interesting, and no review questions are provided. Occasional sidebars delve deeper into a particular subject without detracting from the flow of the story. The book begins with the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus and ends with the war in Iraq and Iraq's liberation. Various eras in our history get about the same amount of ink, with the exception of the Civil War, which is covered in greater detail.
I can't say enough positive about the tone of the book. One of the sentences in the conclusion reads, "The fatal flaw of bin Laden - like Hitler, Stalin, and even the nearsighted Spaniards of 500 years ago - was that they fixed their gaze on the physical manifestations of the wealth of the West, failing to understand that wealth is a mere by-product of other, more important qualities: initiative, inventiveness, hope, optimism, and, above all, faith." Makes you proud to be an American. ~ Bob
Fifteen years ago, Professors Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen set out to correct the doctrinaire biases that had distorted the way America’s past is taught – and they succeeded. A Patriot’s History of the United States is the definitive objective history of our country, presented honestly and fairly.
Schweikart and Allen don’t ignore America’s mistakes through the years. Instead, they put them back in the proper perspective, celebrating the strengths of the men and women who cleared the wilderness, abolished slavery, and rid the world of fascism and communism.

That would depend on how "in depth" your 30 minutes needs to be. In A History of US, Revised 3rd Edition, book 2 is titled Making Thirteen Colonies and covers the years 1600 to 1740. Book 3 is titled From Colonies to Country and covers the years 1735 to 1791. The books are well-written, having won the James Michener prize in writing. Each page includes excerpts from publications or personal journals of the time. You could put together a decent presentation with either, or both.
It was recommended to go with a curriculum that I cannot remember for certain. It might have been Veritas Press.
I have since kept it because it is an excellent resource with many copies of letters, diary pages, art and photographs representing primary resources.
I have the 10th Anniversary copy and the copyright year is 2014. Therefore, I would assume that the copyright year for the 15th Anniversary copy is 2019
I purchased this edition, and it was a paperback book.
The preface to this latest edition states the following: “We (the authors) have incorporated new scholarship and updated the narrative through the end of 2018 and the first half of the Trump administration. We have not made significant revisions to any of their major points except to incorporate a fuller discussion of the ‘Pillars of American Exceptionalism.’ Naturally, to accommodate new material, we have had to cut some discussions from previous eras.”
I believe this is the revised edition. I bought it to use for US History Class by the Classical Historian. I compared it with the Classical Historian required edition and found not much differences. Hope this is helpful.
Recommend resource. I am interested in the reading the positive/more hope-filled approach to telling America's history that the book, reportedly, adopts.
Comprehensive accounts of US History. Currently using it as US History 1 & 2 for high school homeschool
