Practical Geometry Part 2
Companion to the Charlotte Mason Elementary Mathematics Book 6, Practical Geometry 2 is an integral part of Simply Charlotte Mason’s Arithmetic sequence. Planned for one day per week (Friday per Charlotte Mason’s writings), Practical Geometry 2 builds on the concepts taught in Practical Geometry 1. Students will learn about maps, perimeter, navigation, triangles, circumscribed and inscribed circles, quadrilaterals, tangents, perpendiculars, area, area of rectangles/triangles/parallelograms, polygons, nets, surface area, and perimeter of 3D objects. The focus remains on short, concentrated lessons (about 30 minutes a day) and a balance of parent-child interaction and independent work. The course is designed to be twofold, practical and applicable to a child’s daily life while laying a foundation for success at the high school level. Three end-of-term exams are included, as are all answers. Optional lessons are included for families who wish to explore concepts more in-depth. Recommended for the course are a standard ruler (1/16”) and metric ruler (1mm.), a drawing compass, a protractor, set squares, examples of various shapes (cylinder, cone, pyramid), colored pencils or pens in 2 different colors, and 5 mm. grid paper. Some household items are also suggested. As someone who struggled with high school geometry, I found this course to be well-written and understandable, as confirmed by the many “oh, that makes so much sense!” moments I experienced. Students will be well-prepared to tackle high school geometry after finishing Practical Geometry 1 and 2 from Simply Charlotte Mason.
These fun, interesting lessons take approximately 30 minutes each. Charlotte Mason Practical Geometry, Part 2 is designed to be completed in one 36-week school year with lessons done once a week.
Like the The Charlotte Mason Elementary Arithmetic Series, the book is a beautiful, non-consumable hardcover. One book can be used and re-used with all your children!
Geometry Concepts
In Charlotte Mason Practical Geometry, Part 2, your student will practice using several geometrical tools:
- Ruler
- Drawing Compass
- Protractor
- Set Squares
These 26 cards are double-sided with the front of each card showing the image of the capital letter (to be formed with the wood pieces which are purchased separately). Use them to help teach children the stroke sequence for forming the capital letter. The back of each card has four beginning activities to help teach letter awareness and same/different discrimination. Also available in a laminated set. Phyllis
