Subtitled "Beginning Spanish for Homeschoolers and Self-Taught Students of Any Age," this book serves as a great introduction for the family who wants to "try out" the language before investing in a full-fledged Spanish course. This book contains 177 short lessons (usually a page in length), which are straightforward and incremental in progression. Lessons strike a balance between introducing new vocabulary, explaining simple grammatical concepts, and memorization of noun and verb forms. Lessons are self-paced, self-explanatory, and offer plenty of practice exercises. Lessons that introduce new Spanish vocabulary feature a new Spanish word, its English translation, and often a pronunciation tip, followed by about ten sentences to translate. Grammar lessons introduce concepts and verb forms gradually; as verb forms are introduced, they are added to a chart, which students use to aid in translating sentences. For pronunciation help, the author provides free, downloadable MP3 audio files on his website, which can be used with the lessons. Because this book is a non-reproducible worktext (not a workbook), it can be used with multiple students. (The author recommends writing the translating exercises in a separate notebook.). Overall, this course teaches students about 100 vocabulary words, gives them a grasp of basic Spanish grammar, and makes them comfortable translating simple Spanish sentences. After completing this program, students will be ready to tackle a "regular" Spanish program with confidence and they will be off to a good head start! ~ Lisa
Publisher's Description of Getting Started With Spanish
Getting Started with Spanish: Beginning Spanish for Homeschoolers and Self-Taught Students of Any Age is a book that teaches beginning Spanish gradually yet systematically. This unique method was designed specifically to help homeschooled and self-taught students overcome the obstacles they face when studying Spanish at home. In each lesson, after learning something new, you can immediately apply what you've learned by translating the fun practice sentences. Listen to the free audio recordings that accompany the book and listen to a native speaker pronounce all the exercises. As you practice speaking and understanding spoken Spanish, refer to the answer key in the back if you get stuck. For additional help and instruction, the authors have provided extensive audio commentary recordings that teach through every lesson and exercise in the book.
Here in the U.S. we have a lot of Spanish speakers from Mexico & South America. The version of Spanish this book teaches is for Spain. I find this confusing & wish I had known because I wouldn't have used this book. I have to look up the "American" version of Spanish to find out how to say it in Latin American. If they offered two versions I would have given it 5 stars.

Getting Started With Spanish is an excellent starting point for learning Spanish. I believe it will give my middle school student more confidence when taking high school Spanish later.

Great start!
We are really enjoying using this book for Spanish. I love the gentle introduction and my daughter is thriving. She does not feel overwhelmed, and I am happy with the progress she is making. I love this product and I am so glad we purchased it. Highly recommend for anyone looking to start Spanish.

This is perfect for a 4th or 5th grader who isn't quite ready for middle or high school Spanish but is no longer challenged by the less rigorous "learn colors and numbers and do a craft" kiddie stuff The only thing I would add to the product description: The MP3 files are NOT optional Many of the commentary files discuss issues of usage or pronunciation that are not written in the text Definitely plan on downloading them (they're free) and using them alongside the text

After using and loving Getting Started With Latin I bought this book out of desperation to find a beginning Spanish program to use with my daughter It's just as great and effective! This series is the BEST and easiest introduction to learning a new language out there! I highly recommend this book

Is there a teacher's edition to this book?
I am not aware of a teacher's edition and none is mention in the book. It is to be a self-taught, self-paced, self-contained curriculum. There is a website that accompanies this book, but I am not allowed to share the link. (We have not used this program yet.)

Could this be used for high school? Also what would be the next best thing to continue after this book?
You could use this as an introduction in a high school course but you would need to follow-up with a regular first year program. It's designed to give you a flavor for the language.
