Book Two guides young artists through the Gothic, Renaissance and Romantic Periods.
Publisher's Description of ARTistic Pursuits Early Elementary K-3 Book 2 3rd ed - Stories of Artists and Their Art

This book focuses on the lives of artists who left the world with a vision that has awed and inspired others for generations. Using colorful illustrations and works by Master artists like Giotto, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Turner, this book tells the stories of individual artists within major periods of art from 13th century late Gothic to the academy artists of the 18th century. Projects encouraging creativity include watercolor painting, oil pastels, printmaking, and mixed media.

This book is a continuation of the ancient art history section of Artistic Pursuits Early Elementary K-3, Book One, An Introduction to the Visual Arts and it can be used independently. The introduction to each lesson helps children see a relationship between their own lives and that of the artist. Parents simply read the text and allow their child to ponder the similarities. The fictional story adds details and focuses on points for which the artist and his art are remembered. The story incorporates known facts about the artist's life in a way that appeals to young minds. This ten-minute lesson is followed by a project related to the story in which the child works with materials in a variety of ways. The following lesson features a work of art by the Master artist and children interact by answering focused questions related to the artwork. This activity is followed by a project related to the artwork. Printmaking is covered over several artists and periods and is a favorite art technique for children of this age group. This book provides lessons for the completion of thirty-six finished drawings, paintings, and prints that are both original and wholly the child's own. Comb-binding, 85 pages, 36 lessons, 175 illustrations.

Category Description for ARTistic Pursuits K-3 (3rd Edition)

The 3rd edition of the K-3 level is made up of three books, which together provide students a chronological overview of art history along with art lessons. The 2018 edition, which is a series of 8 hardcover books, is the most updated edition of the program, but this edition is still available and has some format differences. This series is comb-bound, and covers art history through three books. The 2018 series also incorporates video lessons and features larger reproductions of art masterpieces.

Book One teaches young students what artists do, what they see, and how to interpret these in light of ancient to medieval art, including cave paintings, palaces, pyramids and cathedrals. Book Two guides young artists through the Gothic, Renaissance and Romantic Periods. Book Three continues the journey, covering Impressionism and Modernism (both European and American) through painting and sculpture. As the following volumes are a continuation of the first volume, I would recommend that users begin with the first volume, particularly as it explains a lot of basic art concepts that are not revisited in much detail once you hit the appreciation lessons.

Do not buy this book if you are not Christian.
I purchased this book because I saw in the catalog it was "neutral". Now I am wary of what RR considers neutral. The book is Euro-Christiancentric. I was an art major and art from this period can be taught from a significantly more neutral perspective. I wished I'd looked at the preview table of contents online. There are a couple of good pointers in the book, color wheels, how to properly us a brush etc, however, the projects seem disconnected from the master works selected, and some outright teach the children incorrect information. For example, for the fresco projects, they teach the child to let the plaster dry and then paint on top of it, causing the child to not learn that the technique of fresco was painted specifically on wet plaster. It also uses techniques for the sake of techniques that don't fit with the subject matter, for example, a textured watercolor portrait after studying the Mona Lisa, and no explanation as to why the texture is being used. For this reason, I cannot recommend this book to anyone, Christian or otherwise.

Recommended by Cathy Duffy!

the first volume was very good.

I used the K-3 art book for my art classes last year and it was fantastic! I intend to use the second half of the book for an elective for my 6th graders next year. I have used a lot of art…
