On Teaching Writing Handbook
Creative Writing Workshops, mini-lessons, con-fabs, and lots of ideas. This smallish handbook from Christian Light equips the parent/teacher – especially the one who may be thinking “I just don't know how to spur my students into quality writing." Written for the classroom but adaptable to the homeschool setting, there is a focus on ideas and practical helps. Suggesting a writing workshop format with the “teacher" delivering mini-lessons and serving more as a mentor, the writing process is explained and explored. While the target audience for this approach to creative writing is probably middle-schoolers, there are suggestions for using the ideas with both younger and older students. Providing background information on a number of genres – fiction, narrative, nonfiction, and poetry – as well as writing mini-lessons, and suggestions for assessment, the Handbook will be a much-appreciated companion. Spiral-bound, 132 pgs. ~ Janice
Language arts programs listed in this section cover most areas of language arts (reading/literature, writing, grammar, spelling and handwriting) in one curriculum, although some skill areas may be covered with less intensity than a focused, stand-alone course.
This resource is a traditional language arts series that provides grade appropriate instruction in phonics, spelling, vocabulary, grammar (including diagramming), word usage, penmanship, dictionary/library skills, all forms of composition (formal and creative), book reports, literature analysis, and poetry over the course of the series. Thorough and comprehensive in terms of coverage, user-friendliness is fundamental to the series, which allows the student to work independently except in the early elementary grade levels. Teacher oversight is expected but made easy by teacher materials that provide answers, grading rubrics, and lesson plans (amount of detail declines with grade level). Student materials are attractive and offer color highlights with some illustrations. The new Sunrise 2nd Edition offers full-color illustrations with instruction sequences in color-shaded boxes. All content reflects a conservative Christian viewpoint. Course components vary a bit with grade level but always include sets of ten magazine-size, consumable student worktexts (LightUnits) coupled with teacher materials. Quizzes and unit tests are part of each LightUnit.
The LightUnits Set Teacher Materials vary with the edition and grade level but, in general provide daily lessons, answers, alternate tests, and grading helps.
Grade 4 Language Arts covers vocabulary, spelling, word usage, penmanship as well as grammar (with diagramming), usage, and mechanics along with numerous miscellaneous skills. Writing skills include sentence and paragraph construction skills with creative writing lessons every unit. The LightUnits Set (10 magazine-size consumable worktexts) provides the instructional/textual material as well as student exercises plus quizzes and tests. The Sunrise 2nd Edition provides full-color illustrations and graphics with 17 lessons per unit. Unit tests are in the middle and can be pulled out. The wraparound, spiral-bound Teacher Guide provides daily lessons coupled with reduced copies of the student pages. Alternate tests with answers (in case a student needs to retake a test) are also provided. The Answer Key is a spiral-bound, landscape book that provides half-size copies of the student pages. You do not need both the Teacher Guide and Answer Key. A Quiz/Test Answer Key provides full-size copies of student quiz and test pages with answers filled in.
