Grammar Land: Grammar in Fun for the Children of Schoolroom Shire
Have you been to Grammar Land? It’s as real as Fairyland, with charming characters. But here, Judge Grammar rules the land and gives all the words to his nine followers, otherwise known as the Parts-of-Speech. Learn about each of these fellows, chapter by chapter. Dr Verb is always busy. On the other hand, sad Article is a raggedly dressed boy who feels a bit cheated since he only has three words to control. Serjeant Parsing has noticed some word stealing among these 9 and Dr. Syntax is just not being obeyed. Judge Grammar orders them all and the children from the Schoolroom Shire to come and quickly sort this all out.
This lovely narrative by one of my favorite children’s authors, Edith Nesbit (author of The Railway Children and Five Children and It), personifies grammar in an imaginative setting. While you’ll be able to tell it was first published in 1878, the writing is an engaging oral read, with stories and poems, and humorous adventures. Students will learn about parsing, the parts of speech, then work through the tenses, nominative case, prepositions, conjunctions, active verbs, and the possessive cases. After the original text, you’ll find a worksheet for each chapter which practices the concepts learned. When possible, answers are provided in the back. Suggested answers are also included. Recommended by SimplyCharlotteMason.com, this is a great way to introduce or review essential parts of speech. 151 pgs, pb. ~ Ruth
