Description
Category Description for Birds of _____ Field Guides

If your family is more of the "backyard birdwatcher" type, and you tend to kind of squint at those little U.S. maps found in most field guides and try to figure whether the particular bird you think you're looking at is in the correct area, these guides are much better suited to your needs. Each guide features birds found in a particular state, and - get this - they're arranged by color, not association with other bird families. You shouldn't have to be an expert just to identify the bird! Each two-page spread features a full-color photo of the species on the left (and the other sex also, if they're substantially different), while the stats are laid out on the right, such as size, markings of the male, female, and juvenile, nest features, type of eggs, time of incubation, how long the fledgling phase lasts, migration patterns, and food. Last but not least the guide compares the species to other, similar species that you might be tempted to confuse the species with, along with other interesting facts on the lifestyle of that particular bird. A map of the state is also included, with counties sketched out, and the range of the bird highlighted. So, next time you're sitting by the window, staring at the birdfeeder and you see this red, black and white bird, don't run for that big fat field guide and thumb through it until the bird is long since gone trying to figure out what it was - reach for one of these and narrow down your search by about 50 times. - Jess

Best Bird Guide Ever
I'll admit, I didn't buy this book from Rainbow Resource. To be fair, I didn't know they sold it until today, and when I first bought it, I didn't know Rainbow Resource even existed. I purchased it years ago, long before I began homeschooling. The reason? My then 4 year old daughter kept asking me what bird was what at the park and I didn't know. So I did some research to find a field guide to help her help herself. I bought this one after looking at many, and I'm glad I did. This book arranges the birds by color. It may not sound like much, but when you see a bird, do you immediately know to which family of birds it belongs? I had no idea the differences between sparrows and wrens, or warblers or nuthatches. No clue. But with this book, you don't need to. Find the bird under the section devoted to the bird's main color, which is indexed on the page edges for quick and easy flipping. Genius!
In the years since I first bought this book, we have added others to our collection, mostly as gifts since this daughter is now 15, and studying biology at the university in hopes of becoming an ornithologist. But this book is the one that we still take with us to the park to help her younger siblings identify birds (when she can't go with us, otherwise she just tells us as she knows them all). I credit this book with her lifelong love of birds and her desire to spend her life studying them.
This book is specific to Florida, but there are others in the series for other regions of the country. I highly recommend purchasing this one if you live in Florida or plan to visit. As with my daughter, you never know when such a small investment is going to influence a life in such a major way.
